I'm having a hard time deciding with an audio setup in my new 2001 SS Ute I've recently got my hands on. I'm going to do a HU/CB radio combo.
This is the first ute I've got, my previous car was a First On Rust Development ED Fairmont and I stripped all the aftermarket parts I put in it (Tacho/CB.. blah blah). Screw the kid driving it next... he can pay for his own bread.
Anyways what I want to do is setup the ute the way I had my last car but better. I've got my CB radio with a nice big antenna I can install that somewhere near the tray/cabin area without too much hassle. On the audio side of things, I want to rip the Eurovox out of course stick the HU and CB in the 2 avaliable slots and then use my Pioneer 3-way 6" speakers for the front doors.
Now to the point.
I'm thinking of putting in 2 rear speakers... (not sure if 6x9's are overkill... it seems like it since it's a small cabin, it's a ute of course) and get a 2 channel amp (dunno what kind/what power yet) and a sub (same goes here) and hook the rear speakers, amp and sub in a tri-mode config. I've done it before many moons ago, I realise that the power of the amplifier is going to be driving the speakers and sub at a weaker level and the impedance levels need to be closely looked at.
OR
Should I ditch the rear speakers and invest in a quality monoblock amp and sub and put the 2 together.
Personally I think the latter is more suited for the ute and it saves a lot of farting around...
I'm asking in your humblist opinions, which would you go for and/or would you change anything? (Budget isn't too much of a concern)
BTW I haven't done any measurements yet so I don't know if my Pioneers will fit in the doors... also don't worry about the CB, I've got a way to set it up with a mobile phone so if I use either the CB or mobile, the sound system should switch off if either are switched on. Bit of DIY circuitry![]()
The 6" speakers you have will go into the doors not a prob. Thats what you will be pulling out
Honestly, I wouldn't bother trying to run 2 speakers and a sub off of a 2 channel, with the cost of a 2 channel and the components to make the crossover, you will almost pay for a new 4 channel. Like this one
Personally, I would use that same amp to power your door speakers and a single 10" sub.
Yes, 6x9s wouldn't be worth it. There only really neccessary when not running a sub nad you need to beef up the bottom end of your music, unfortunatly, you will find you won't have enough room to get the volume required for the 6x9s. Stick with your 6"s and if you feel like upgrading them at all, then purchase 6" SPLITS with a tweeter mounted in the stock location.
Please, a relay radio mute is nothing new....some of us here make them in our sleep! lol
Good luck.
You put you left foot in, your put your right foot in , you take your left foot out and you slide it all about!
lol thanks for the tips mate.
I would've thought running 2 speakers and a sub off a 2ch amp would be cheaper. Guess I've been out of this game for a bit of time heh. I'll think about the 4ch amp and wiring that up to the speakers and bridge to the sub.
The 6x9's would be overkill, I've got a mate that has 6x9's in his XH ute, it works pretty well and the general sound system he's got really is impressive. Although you do seem to go deaf a bit quicker hehe.
The radio mute for the CB and Mobile is something I thought most people still don't know how to do. Another reason that I've been out of this for too long.
Should be a good project to fiddle around with on the weekends. Might have to wait awhile though, gotta fend off a few bills and so on.
Thanks again!
Out of this game for awhile? Your younger then me! lol
But yeah, unless you have the crossovers handy....4channel is cheaper.

I did have a cheap crossover long ago, I used it but my brother asked if he could buy it off me plus a few other audio tid bits for his car so I gave it to him for free since it was already fairly outdated, the equipment worked better than stock so his was happy with it. Well I'll have a look at the 4 channels then. In your opinion, which brand would you recommend? My preferences arn't well backed since I'm starting up again.
I'm only 21, I've worked on a fair share of mates cars when I was doing my electronics course in high school (was about 17), also did physics, helped somewhat when it came to understanding sound. I let it go after turning 19 and now I'm getting back into it. I find it a good hobby to get into![]()
