Default running 6 speakers off the headunit?

    hey all,

i have just been told that running 6 speakers off my headunit will blow it up? im running 4 rockford fosgate punch speakers, and 6x9s are JBL and the headunit is a alpine CDE117E. I will be amping for speakers down the track but for the mean time will this be ok?

Yeah, a head unit had 4 speaker outputs... Use them for 4 speakers, not 6

Also, speak to some people about how to set up and design a decent stereo... It will not have 6 speakers.

Your better off getting rid of those 6X9's. There a crap product and I have no idea why they have taken off. The 4 Rockfords when amped properly will be more then good enough. Even just running off a head unit there should be no problems.

6x9s have there place. If you don't want a sub but would like some level of bass then 6x9s can be the right product. It does pose a problem when used with subs though as other speakers could be better suited.

I also have heard 6" speakers play more bass then some 6x9" speakers. If you compare a good set of 6" with an OK set of 6x9"s then likely the 6" will be better. But if you compare some equally good 6x9s, then the 6x9s should play more/lower bass.

Also depends on what your definition of 'more then enough bass' is. My ol' man believes no bass is more than enough, I disagree.

Your old man... Wow sounds like mine. Yeah fair enough. I still stand by my original statement in regards to not using the 6x9's though.

Oh don't get me wrong, I totally believe that your better off spending all your speaker money on a really good set of 6" splits for the front. Properly installed and tuned it will give you good highs and mids. Then later on when you have more money get a sub to give you bass.

Your confusing bass for midbass. You can't substitute for cone area, which is why a 6 inch speaker vs a 6x9 of similiar value/quality, the 6x9 will be able to play lower in the fq's with less distortion.

Acarmody is right, 6x9's do have their place, and they are far from a crap product. They can be considered the wrong component when not suitably paired, but that can be said about any component in general, and not just a 6x9.
