Just got my Alpine CDE-102E Head Unit installed today & I'm already having problems.
For some reason every time I try to connect something to the USB I get the same error message
"UNIT ERROR". I have no idea why this is happening or what I can do about it.
Any help would be mostly appreciated.
Cheers,
RK
Go back to who ever installed it and tell them to fix it.
Warranty.
No offence mate but it took me 2 minutes to find the owners manual of that model and find the exact error and the remedy,
Your USB stick won't work with the H/U. Is it one of those special ones that can be used to boot programs and stuff off. Those don't sit well with H/Us.A USB device that is not supported by the unit is connected.
- Connect a USB device that is supported by the unit.

99% of USB sticks will work, the salesman for car audio might not be IT expert, he can't possibly know every USB stick out there. Your best bet is to go get some $5 special and use that, no extra features or anything, just storage. Seriously Harvey Norman are selling 4GB sticks for $5 this weekend, why would you get pissed when you just spent hundreds on a H/U and its installation?
What is your phone and what exactly is it saying. And do you mean when you plug you phone into the USB socket of your H/U? If so its because you likely haven't got it set up as 'mass storage' and it won't read like a USB stick.

Yeah, I picked up a 2gb Lexar stick. Figured that'd work but no luck. I never got an iPod/iPhone direct cord. So I figured plugging it into the front USB would be the way to go. But as you can see, no luck
Nope plugging a iPod/iPad directly into the USB won't work, hence the reason there are special sockets for these devices.
So yeah just get a different USB stick, just get the absolute cheapest 2-4gb one you can find. I use USB myself for my H/U and it is infinitely better than when I had to burn a new CD every time I wanted to add a song to my collection.
I had trouble with my first USB stick and I think it also was a Lexar. I think most of the Lexar sticks have security features and some of them have that bootable feature. Make sure the new one doesn't have either of those features, or it probably won't work.

And so how do I go about getting the iPhone to connect. I'm guessing the guy who installed it was ment to do it but never did??
You have to buy the cable first. An iPhone/iPod can be connected to this unit by using the proprietary
ALPINE FULL SPEED™ Connection Cable (KCE-433iV) (sold
separately). When this unit is connected by using the cable, the controls
on the iPod are not functional.

There is nothing wrong with cheap cables from Hong Kong, I buy most of my cable from there for a fraction of the cost of buying it here and I've never had a problem. Probably made in the same factory anyway.

make sure the usb is formatted properly. some will only work with the correct file system. check the specs in the back of the owners manual, it will tell you what format it needs to be.
^ Good point. I think its FAT32 you have to format it to.
