Default reccomend me a sub :)

Hey guys, I've current got a Kicker ZX700.5 that puts out minimum 420watts RMS @ 2ohm from the mono block channel.

Im just looking for a better sub to use with it.

ATM im using a sub from one of these combos
Kicker KICKPACK Sub & Amp Combo | Car Sound, Subwoofers : JB HI-FI

I want something nice and punchy, since i listen to more rock than anything, but i do crank up some pendulum / skitz mix on occasion. Ive had the sub hooked up to that amp for about a year now and its started to get sloppy and its clipping. Im gonna go ahead and guess too much power for far too long.

JB is having a car audio sale (30% off) on wednesday, so preferably something from them.
I dont mind buying just a sub and building a box, aslong as plans are available.

    ready, set... GO!

    Cheers

Is the sub you have now a SVC 4ohm, if it is you could add a second one, and wire then down to 2 ohm, and it would pretty well match the rated input. I'm sure you could get one pretty cheap minus the amp in the bundle pack? < my suggestion

Otherwise I don't think your really likely to find a low powered sub within your price range that meets your expectations.

If if you must use amp then a DVC 4 ohm sub would allow you to get the most out of it.

Also it shouldn't be clipping, the amp puts out more power than the sub is rated at , so it would have had some headroom to begin with. If your clipping the amp then you have your settings wrong, something you need to sort out before you go throwing any more money into it.

Whats not within my price range? I never really specified one. I dont think im clipping the amp, more the sub. its started making more of a "pop" sound rather than a "boom" at certain frequencies.

I just came up with a rough budget based on your current gear, and you wanting to use your existing amp, might not have been spot on but since you didn't specify one it was all i had to work with.

Your choice's in sub's will be limited to your amps capabilities. You could spend a fair bit of money on a more SQ orientated sub, but you might find yourself dissapointed with it's output given the amount of available power.

Also you don't clip the driver you send it a clipped signal, which comes from either the source, or the amp....

OK all been sorted guys. I ended up just buying the Dual 12" Kicker Comp (DC122) sub + box combo.

    How much did that cost?

$425 and $30 postage would be my guess.

2 single 4 ohm subs making a load of 2 ohm is spot on.
Although the ratings suggest you have slighlty to much power they will be bloody loud !

$299 is what i paid for the subs. brand new from JB hifi during the 30% off sale and yer, they are WAYYYYYY too loud, but i love it hahah. almost have difficulty breathing and your ears are pounding after a few minutes. I actually think they've blown the regulator on my alternator..... either that or its coincidence that thats played up today. BTW that boot install is awsome

Im going to have to rearrange my setup. I actually cant slide my sub back into the boot because my amplifier is mounted under my parcel shelf, so there isnt enough vertical clearance

    reccomend me a sub :)-2010-11-11-11.24.47.jpg

I think you need more amps, or boot space, one or the other.

But seriously thats awesome.......until you need to look out the rear-view mirror, nah kidding thats a wicked setup.

haha should hope not considering I do installing for a living !

Funny story but , my only concern about using a rental in each state was that it HAD to be an Echo , I had all wires cut to length , the box was made to fit , the battery was made to fit , the deck harness plugged striaght in , so it was a 40 min job to fit the complete system.
If I didnt get an Echo I was pretty much screwed , the guy in Brisbane when i got there said that both Echos were already on hire but he had a Lancer wagon or something for me , told him it was no good and course he asked why it HAD to be an Echo , figured either way I wasnt going to get the car so told him why ...

Its like this mate , I come from WA , I have 8 grands worth of stereo im going to fit in it for 24 hours , go to a comp and compete then remove stereo and bring your car back intact 100%

After he stood there stunned for a few minutes he told me that if I took the wagon and did what I had to do (get hotel and crap) then come back 4 hours later when the Echo was due in he would swap the cars for me , how good is that

Ironically when I went to Sydney a year later I took Mum with me and course she read the rental agreements and it specifies in there you cant take the car in shows or some crap , dont think it said I cant have myself a decent stereo

Another funny story , after winning Aus champ in St A and runner up in bass race they gave me these bloody trophies that stood bout 4 feet !

I had to literally disassemble two 30 piece trophies and pack them into bags so I could bring them back on the plane !
