Hey guys im looking at installing a 1000w slim 12 inch sub into my ute and am wondering what sort of amp i will need to power it to a reasonable standard. cheers
Can you give us a RMS power rating or at least the model number of the sub?

No probs mate, just remember if you ever get another one of those subs down the track and wire to 2-ohms, its free power from the amp.

308F ? the F usually denotes free air , does it say free air on the box ?
If so then putting it in a small box in a ute is going to end in tears or sound crap.

Good pick-up mate, I didn't even see that.
KAL SPL is right, that only way to get even half-decent sound out of that in an enclosure is to build a pretty damn big one. If you haven't bought it yet than I wouldn't, you going to be hard pressed to get a free-air sub to work properly in a ute.

cheers guys, no i havent bought it yet, i may go looking for some subs on the weekend
If you don't mind spending a little more than maybe try this model, Ryda Car Audio - Pioneer TS-W308D4 12" 1400W Subwoofer($178.85) , get the dual 4-ohm model so you can wire it up to 2-ohm and get more power from your amp, or buy a cheaper amp.

Hope your joking.
Where would you fit two 15" subs in a ute and still have it practical?
EDIT: And if your going to make a pissing contest out of this, stop messing around with ordinary brands, 19,200wrms at 24V http://www.stetsom.com.br/eng/Detalh...c=8133&cat=172 , or 16,200wrms at 13.8v http://www.stetsom.com.br/eng/Detalh...c=8110&cat=172

Wow that's an awesome setup, but I highly doubt the OP is looking for that since hes looking at subs in the $150ish area. Still looks tough though.
How would it sound while your driving, with the seats being so close to the cones that is?

Oh hurts quite badly !
I torture tested on the way to Perth at full tilt for solid 2 hours with the windows down , I tried to shut the amps off but sadly I ran out of road
Tested it at PC and it did 145Db
My ears rang for the next 3 days !

ok guys so i bought a 12 inch sub that has a max power of 1000 watts and 250 watts RMS. Now in order to power this can i get away with this amplifier?
PIONEER GM-D7500M DIGITAL MONO BLOCK AMPLIFIER CAR 800W (eBay item 170573653576 end time 04-Dec-10 15:57:46 AEDST) : Cars, Bikes, Boats
cheers
Mate you have to put up the model number of the sub. Without it we don't know the impedance levels so there is no point in looking at an amp.
cheers, its model number is Pioneer TSW303R
It's a single 4 ohm.
Basically it has one voice coil, and the base impedance level of that coil is 4 ohm's.
The amp you have listed puts out 200 rms @ 4 ohm. So yes it will drive the sub, just not quite to it's full potential.
The reason why Acarmody reccomended the other sub above, was because of it's dual voice coil arrangement. Multiple coils allow you to wire them together to drop the impedance levels. It's difficult to find a mono block amplifier that produces decent power levels at 4 ohm, because they are all designed to run lower than that. Using any mono amp at a 4 ohm load is just limiting the amps potential.
End of the day you have to spend more on the amp than what you did on the sub, and it still dosen't perform at it's best. You should have taken the advice on board that was given to you in the above posts.
Did you buy the sub new, can you refund it or swap it? You don't have to spend any more than your combined budget, just picking the right components that will work well together is all.
