hey guys. probably already been covered but i couldnt find it so here goes. i need some good advice.
im about to put a stereo in the commodore, but i have a few questions.
1. where to mount amp.
2. how to mount 6x9's
3. where to mount tweeters.
4. what to do for the rear door speakers
1. OK so im unsure bout the amp, i was thinkin under the passenger seat, that way short power and RCA leads, short leads to splits but a long lead to the sub in boot. thoughts?
2. as its only a commodore it doesnt have the grills in the parcel shelf, so do the speakers go into the carpet part its self, or into the metal under neath. i am yet to get the grills, but are only 20 bucks from JB HI-FI
3. having some trouble deciding where to put the tweeters for the splits, any one got pictures?
4. as im probably just gonna leave the back door speakers stock, should i just leave them unplugged or hook them up to the front speaker from HU, as original front speakers will be splits running from the amp.
sorry for the long post, just need some ones advice that has done a good install in a VT.
cheers
1. typically on the back of the backseat. sometimes under the front seats.
2. on parcel shelf, have to get spacers for them to fit as you cant cut the framework. or make a custon parcal shelf.
3. tweeters (front) on dash, on doors-mirror-plastic-thing/ a pillar.
4. anything you want. usually a good set of 6 inch speakers.
1. ive been told to keep sub wire as short as possible. but under front seat the amp has access to air an air conditioned envoronment. most wiring kits are made for HU to boot, so unless u get a shortened kit then youll have a roll of unused RCA lead to hide.
2. umm, i dunno. others will tell. 6x9s arent all hat crucial are they? if ur gonna have fronts and speakers in the backdoors? my stereo is painfully loud and its comprised of 6.5inch alpines and 6 inch kenwoods.
3. no pics cos my net sucks (golf) balls.
my 2 cents![]()
i dont even think ull fit an amp under the drivers seat?
put the tweeters in the factory place, or if u wanna show them off. just above the factory place. best place for it in the commodore.
6x9 will fit into the parcel shelf, you just have to knock out the spacer. hammer and hit, there only holding by a small spot weld or 2.
but if u want a sub then just get 6 inch speakers over the 6x9!
6x9 is pretty much a 8 inch sub so dont worry about that if u have sub/s
i mounted my amps in my vt in the parcel shelf. made a piece of board and bolted it up under. simple!

somefool, as the title states "stereo for my VT", the VT onwards models have 6" x 9" holes pre-cut from the factory with metal pieces tack welded in place. All thats needed is to remove the parcel shelf and the metal pieces, then screw your 6x9s in place. You will need to buy some grilles though as you'll miss out on 90% of the sound they produce.
1. Amp mounting is fairly limited in Commodores, depending on the size of the amp. If you can fit it on the back of the back seats then fine, but alot of larger amps wont fit there comfortably. Other options include underneath the front seats if the amp isnt too high, or on the underside of the parcel shelf.....either mounted upside down or you can make up a tray to hold the amp the right way around.
2. Covered.
3. Best (and easiest) spot is the stock locations in either corner of the dash. Just remove the demister vent panels (2-3 screws) and you'll see the tweeters in each corner.
4. Nothing, leave them disconnected if your going with 6x9s in the rear shelf.
Edit, thekid93 beat me....getting too slow![]()

You want to put the tweeters where they sound best to you. At some point once the front stage is mostly installed, connect your tweeters with enough speaker wire so that you can move them around the cabin. Pick a song that you are very familiar with, and begin somewhere low down (not too low obviously) and from there work your way up. What you want is to get the sound stage around the same height as your ears. This dosen't always mean speakers at ear level either, lot's of things come into effect.
Once you have found a good height, the next thing is angle, they need to be angled correctly also.
Or you can just use the factory location as mentioned above, depends what your after really....
You can spend 4 hours playing around with angles etc, or just spend 10 min and put them up in the stock spots.......

Rather than installing my SPZ60's maybe i should just run some speaker wire into the back of the box that they come in
>>holdenboy
No, that would stupid.....
As ive said to others i'll happily take them off your hands

You can't have them![]()
i stand corrected haha
thanks for all the help. within 2 minutes i got those pieces of sheet knocked out. i thought they were just press marks from when the parcel shelf was being made up in the factory.
i ran out of day light so i couldnt connect em up so just left all the wires behind the back seat for now. i cant get either of the back seats to click back in properly though, like how theres 2 metal latches that hold them each in, i could only get one per seat. any one had this problem? do i need to take out the arse part of the seat first?
again thanks
When putting the back cushions back in I just pushed against them hard and whacked them downwards, always worked. Just align it first.

Before you put the parcel shelf back in put some foam of sound deadening material under it . The factory stuff isnt the greatest ,plus the wires for the rear window stop light will rattle . When you cut the parcel shelf to fit the grilles make sure you cut just inside the impressions or the holes will be too big and the grilles will fall through.
Nah he's talking about the upper section of the parcel shelf, the carpeted piece.
You will need to cut the holes out and buy / fit some grilles. Yes Dayvo is right theres a groove outlining where to cut, your better of cutting just on the inside of this groove.....its always easier to take a little more off if its too small for the grille.

yea got em in. took a bit of push and shove. finally figured out how to get the touchscreen out. pretty much had to take the WHOLE dash out. had a mess all over the front lawn. had a bit of a mix up at the shop with my amp, so cant put that in yet but hooked the 6x9s up. they sound good. cant wait to break them in proply with the splits and sub and smash a bit of ministry out
