Default Project: Building a portable sound system

Well I'm bored again so I'm having a crack at using some of the old parts I have laying around. So I'm going to make a 4 speaker sound system, with an amp, that will run off 240V wall socket, or able to be hooked up to a car battery via leads, for those outdoor parties. For sound input it will have an old Pioneer H/U, and also have a 3.5mm plug for connecting up any other devices, since H/U doesn't have 3.5mm input (that would have made this a crap load easier!!).

Most (not all) of the parts.

This should hopefully be finished next week but it may be a slow (spare time) project.

Definately. Now if I can just find my damn solder I can start on the pre-amp kit. *goes looking*

What are you going to use as the base, going to build a box out of plywood or adapt something? Have an idea in the back of my mind to do something like this with an older vintage style fridge, using a small form PC and touchscreen built into the door, would be kind of cool to have the beer and music in one unit.

My mobiles output is really low. Even with the amp on maximum gain it still isn't that loud.

Now I've finished assembling the preamp and its way too loud. *Sigh* Wish I had just got a second-hand H/U with 3.5mm input. Maybe I'll just buy an attenuator or something.

    Heres my epic 3.5mm input,

What Amperage does the Powersupply put out on its rail?
An is it a single rail high amperage or multiple 12v rails?

    Cheers

20A on a single 12V rail. Of course 20A might be a stretch of the imagination for a $30 power supply. The amp only puts out a total of 160wrms so it should hold, or catch fire, one or the other.

I have another cheap power supply here that has about 8A on the 12V rail that I will use to run the H/U and fans and stuff.

Easy way to check, What amperage are the fuses that the amp takes?

But 20a more than likely will kill the power supply.

Well the amplifier has 30A worth of fuses.

And the power supply "says" it will give 20A, can't really check.

Ok normally, If you can provide the Fused power of the amplifer, Via a 12v power supply, You are normally all clear. To turn it up without melting things. Just a word of warning just incase something bad happens bud.

My only hope if it does go up in flames, is that it is outside at the time, and it burns beautifully. LOL

If I overload the power supply I suspect the PSU fuse will just blow.

PSU fuses normally only blow if its a 240v power spike/brown out.

You should be okay I rekon, Looking forward to this build bud.

    Me too,

It took me over an hour to put that pre-amp board together, being my first time with such a job. Got a nice headache from breathing in so much solder fumes, my bad. LOL.

Just an idea to throw out there if you havn't already planned the base, guy at work uses an old roller tool chest for his (that way he can lock the doors, because it stays at work). Then you can wheel it wherever

What, with the cost of a decent tool chest, he must be insane. LOL

I'll put some casters or something on it to make it portable.

Nah its not as much as you think. There's nothing really there that someone with basic knowledge couldn't put together.

Unfortunately I've barely got anything further done. My days off have been chockers lately. Helping my grandparents move, called in to work on my days off, getting shit ready for Uni, it just doesn't end. And next week I lost one of my days off to work, lets see what happens on the other. I'm starting to see why my dad gets so grumpy when my mom pre-arranges his weekends with her crap.

He probably found it at a garage sale or something, i doubt he'd have gone out and bought a new one (that would make it worth more than the stereo he was locking up, it was ancient lol)

Fair enough. I went looking for a decent one for my stuff and they are about $500 up, and that's for a cheapie. I'm thinking 'screw that' and bought a $20 tool box from SuperCheap. LOL. Damn I'm a cheap bastard.

Hmm maybe I should go with my grandparents to all the garage sale and 'jumbles' they go too, might find some deals.
