I just picked up the factory subs (with brackets) and amp out of a VT Calais to install in my car. I have long been tossing up between 8" subs or 6x9s so when the 8" subs and amp come up on ebay cheap I snapped them up.
VT VX Commodore Rear Parcel Shelf Sub Woofers & Amp | eBay
I don't have much money to spend (at the moment) so I want to install it as cheaply as possible at the moment.
Right now I have about 10 tabs open all about VT/VX Calais subs and amps but none of them have the information I am looking for.
I have a Kenwood MP3 player with RCA outs, but I'm not sure if the stock Eurovox amplifier has RCA inputs or if my car would have wiring that would plug straight in to it behind the boot trim?
I'm not too keen on using it but its either use it or use nothing for a month or possibly more.
I will eventually upgrade the subs to something like these unless I can find something with higher RMS for cheaper.
8" Paper Cone Woofer - Jaycar Electronics
And will be getting this cheap Kenwood amp.
Ryda Car Audio - Kenwood KAC-M525 2 Channel Amplifier($118.85)
The reason for that AMP is it often comes up on ebay for $75 with free shipping.
Will that amp should be enough to power two 8" woofers?
One last thing, I am happy with the sound from what I assume is stock door speakers but only feels it lacks a little bass. I have some 6.5" 400w peak (100w RMS) speakers that I bought years ago still in the box.
I'm not sure if they will fit straight in the door speakers being 1/2" bigger without modifications, if they would go straight in is there much point putting them in if I'm not going to amp them?
No plans at all to amp my door speakers, no plans for another big sub and amp in the boot as I already gave them away because I was constantly putting them in and out when I needed the room. I don't expect the same bass but just a little more would be nice.
Thanks to everyone who can give me some info.
rear door speakers or parcel shelf speakers are always good for a rear fill so its not just sound from the front speakers. thats why i buy a quality set of splits for the front and a cheaper set of coaxils for the rear. i had the 8" subs in my parcel shelf but the speakers were well and truely buggerd! so i took them out to allow bass through to the cabin. i kept the spacers just in case i wanna get rid of my big double box and get more room.
Hmm, In bullet points - Could you write down exactly what you are chaising here? Im getting a few mixed messages.
So you have the option of purchasing an amp for the Jaycar 8" subs within a few months?
Wiring a stock amp to an aftermarket headunit is possible, It's cost would not be worth it however.
Now you say your after more bass from your door speakers, But if you are installing subwoofers why would you need more from them? The 400watt speakers you speak of would be no better then stock by the sounds, I would forget them alltogether.
Yeah Ill probably buy the 8" from Jaycar to replace the stock ones.
No sorry if you got confused, Im not after bass from the door speakers. I am getting the 8's for bass because the door speakers don't quite give enough.
I thought as much with the amp, 99% sure it didn't have RCA's but it was worth asking.
Now that its narrowed it down a bit Ill say what info I still need.
- Is this enough to power two 8s? Ryda Car Audio - Kenwood KAC-M525 2 Channel Amplifier($118.85)
- Is it worth putting these in for the fronts? Performance Teknique - An American Ingenuity
Sorry champ,
There was a line in the first post saying the original lacked bass response. I thought you were after more from them. As far as those 'Performance Tek' speakers go i would not bother, How much are they a pair? Unless you are able to afford putting an amplifier in for the door speakers, I would't advise to buy aftermarkets. Reason being, Aftermarket speakers are generally made for more power, And will not go any louder then a stock speaker. If anything, You will loose sound quality.
That amp seems OK, I presume it is 60RMS. However those 8" woofers you are looking at are a 'Home theatre' type woofer, Being 8ohm and 90rms you would need allot bigger amp to get them going. You can run 8ohm for car use, But your amp's power will be halved again.
They 6.5" cost me about $40 around 3 years ago, I think they are even cheaper now. Not really worried about using them or not.
I read another post someone said I could run them parallel and it would be 8ohm but I have no idea when it comes to that. I was also thinking I would need 4ohm woofers but too much information conflicting so I don't really know if its right or not.
I blew 4 amps in my last car, first 2 running 1 sub and 2nd 2 running 2 subs. Just wired them up how other people told me but either they were shit amps or I did it wrong.
Ill look in to it more tomorrow and figure out the wiring and whats possible.
Thanks for the advice.
