Car Audio lingo

Hey all,

Just recently got my licence and am driving a '99 VT Acclaim S2. Was looking to put a sound system in my car. It doesn't need to be top of the range, I'm looking to spend around $500 or so. I just don't what I should be looking for, or what sort of questions I should be asking.

I've checked out some of the sticky's here, the budget thread: (Planning A System On A Budget) was really helpful price wise, but again I don't exactly know what I'm looking at.

I guess my question is: What does a good sound system consist of, what are the leading brands and what sort of system am I looking at in my price range?

$500 won't really get you far. Perhaps a headunit and speaker upgrade.

could probably include the $100 jaycar powered sub in that budget.
