Hi guys
im looking to buy some good gear i have narrowed i down to these options. i am after good sound quality NOT power.
Speakers
Polk Audio MM6501 Car 6.5" Component Speakers 250w
JL AUDIO C2-650 COMPONENT 2-WAY SPEAKERS 6.5"
Sub: Would i be better off with a 10"?
Polk Audio MM1240-DVC 12" CAR Sub MM1240DVC 800w
JL ? the good ones are to deep i have about 120mm to play with if has anyone has seen a one better than the polk one?
AMP:
now i have been told a monoblock will do the system justice 2 channel would just be a waste of time? i know bugger all about amps so if i have chosen the wrong ones or it will sound shit plz lmk im only learning.
Polk Audio PA600.1 Monoblock Power Car Amp 1200W
JL AUDIO JX500/1 Car Stereo Mono Amplifier 500w
I know some people dont like new people asking them "what speakers should i buy" i have tryed to do my research and listend to a few systems pick things i do like and things i dont so i like both these brands so i would love you input
Once again my knowledge is very limited. so every bit of help would be greatly appreciated. i just want to get the best sounding system i can.
Thanks for your time
Step 1. Go and listen to JL's
Step 2. Go and listen to polk.
Step 3. Which sound better?
Step 4. Install speakers.
Also, you can not run speakers off a monoblock amp, monoblock amps are designed to run subs and that is all. What is your budget? I Can suggest an amp for your splits. There is no need to keep your brands the same either, if you like the sound of the Polk speakers by all mean buy them, but chances are there will be a better amp than what Polk offers for the money.

mmmm say $300 for an amp
And do you want a 2 channel or a 4 channel? (Fronts only or would you like to run rears or a sub later?)

na im running a sub for sure
So did you want a 4 channel? (Splits off channels 1+2 then bridge 3/4 for sub?) Or will you want to add a second monoblock amp later?

na put the sub on the 4 channel bridge the sub and keep the splits on 1 and 2
that will still sound alright yer?
coz to get a good mono block and an amp to run the splits will be like 500?
thanks
i just got that exact 12" polk sub installed in my car with a custom box and il give the thumbs up on it! really good sound quality and it can get loud and produced deep bass for those bass heavy songs. its an all rounder, hits hard but also produces clear sound.
You can't just say it would be $500 for 2 amps, though it is possible they would probably both be shit. Our site sponsor Joe from Shopping Secure has a pretty good 4 channel amp for the money, the Shopping Secure - Ground Zero Iridium GZIA 4110HPX - (Powered by CubeCart) this will give your splits 70wrms each and your sub 250wrms, enough power to get them moving a bit. Obviously not ideal, but a very cost effective option and you are still getting quality gear.

I have just bought a JL Audio XD600/6 6-channel for $440 ex USA on EBay They are D class amps so run very efficiently. It delivers 75 watts x 4 into 4 ohm and 180rms 2 channels bridged at 4 ohm. It will drive 4 full range drivers and a sub. Another bonus with the JL amps is that you can buy a separate channel control so if you your are short on RCA outputs you can use a splitter and still remotely control one or two channels of the amp with this control.
You won’t go far wrong with either Polk or JL.
12” subs will sound louder for the same input than 10” but 10s will sound fine as long as you are not obsessed with overpowering bass.
I have two JL 6.5” 6W3v3 sub in my CV8. They run in parallel at 4ohm out of a bridged amp in mono. They produce quite nice bass that complements the rest of the system. They won’t break windows but I like it for systems that all fits in the factory positions.
Hope that is all helpful.
+1 Polk Speakers ( got db's front and rear)
+1 Kicker Amps and Subs lol just to throw more into the equation
so would i be better of with 2 amps or do u think the jl will do the job
if u put a switch in can it damage the sub or amp killing the power to it ?
Put the switch on the remote wire, it will be just like turning the car off as far as your amp knows.

yer but how will the door speakers still run if i run them though 1 amp?
do u think it will be ok to run just one amp or would it be better running 2 coz to run 2 im looking at about $200 more
what do u all think?
if i have 2 amps the sub mono block will have a bass controll with it so that will be easy
for price/quality go with polk speakers there insanely good for the cost but if cost is not an issue go with jl speakers go kicker for sub/amp nd jl have the best 2 or 4 channel amps in my opinion.. but you need to make decisions for yourself.. listen to to all brands of all components (speakes, subs, amps) and make your decision on price-quality.. no point paying a ****load more for jus a bit more quality
I haven't been on this forum for ages, but things haven't changed much. The usual posters giving accurate advice which is then ignored.
Why is it brand A vs brand B when you haven't listened to either? How did you possibly narrow it down to 2 brands that you have not yet seen / heard?
People are always quick to jump in and say which brands are better than others - BUT
Everyone has different preferences, tastes, and goals in mind, and what may sound very good to one person, might not sound so good to the next. You need to make the decision yourself about which speakers are the best for you. Fair enough members making reccoemndations for other components which might offer better value for money such as the GZ amp mentioned in this thread.
As for your amplifier question, of course having a second amplifier for the sub will improve the subs performance and offer greater tuning capabilities. If it fits within your budget then there's not really much of a decision to be made.

There is no such thing as too much power. It is better to run an amp rated higher than the rated input of a speaker than one too far below. BUT it all comes down to common sense. If the speakers are distorting they are in danger of being fried. Most music will only draw a small percentage of you amps power. It is the musical peaks, crescendos, deep bass beats etc that call on the reserves from your amp and these only occur for split seconds. Bass boost, “loudness” etc all call on the amp to drive harder and can cause them to clip earlier than a nice flat response. If you need to EQ then EQ by subtraction. This is how good sound engineers do it. If you need more bass reduce the other frequencies as oppose to increasing the bass. You will be sending your speakers a better cleaner signal.
Running large amounts of clean, un clipped power will not normally damage speakers. The real advantage of high powered amps is not increased volume but less distortion at higher volumes. But as I said it comes down to common sense.
how do you tune it all is there a thread on it? it sounds complicated im sure i can nut it all out.
UPDATE: ok i have chosen my speakers and sub
SUB: Polk Audio MM1040-UM
Speakers:Polk Audio MM6501
i went in to an audio shop the guy recommend these amps to power this gear
Rockford Fosgate R500-1 for the sub
Hifonics ZX100.2 for the MM6501
he said that i could use a HIFONICS ZXi40.4 if i wanted to go with a bit better quilty and run it using 2 channels plus if i want to run rears speackers in a future i can
is this a good set up ? what should i change any ideas/help would be amazing
thanks for your time
