Hey all,
Im upgrading my stereo with some Boston & Rockford Fosgate gear,
Cut a long story short the list is as follows:
Boston 6 1/2" Splits in front doors
Boston 6" Speakers in rear
RF sub in the boot
RF Amps to suit
Cut a long story short im just wondering if anyone has put their Tweeters into the door where vents are? Ive attached a photo, bit small but it was all i could find!!
If so can anyone post me some photos of how and what it came out like, cheers.
I had it setup like that in my old calais but got rid of them whilst converting it to stock.
Anyone help would be appreciated!

Haven't seen them put there, doesn't mean it can't be done
I'm guessing you know the factory tweeters are in the dash pad? Any reason you're not using those spaces?

Factory position for tweeter is pretty good, still able to get very good sound quality with them there. Whats the reason you want to move them?

Yeah well to be honest with you my old vs had them there and i was happy with the sound quality of them and accesswise was good. Ive never heard decent quality tweeters in the dash pads so Sorta biased as to the positioning of the new tweeters i suppose. When i had them in the old calais they were adjustable and able to swivel in height etc. How difficult is it to access and remove existing tweeters? The ones i have now are crap. Cheap kicker splits. I do suppose that its a different look. I guess soundwise you would be getting more direct music from the door vent position than the dash pad tweeters? Whats your opinion?

Easy as pie to remove the old ones. Take off the panel on the side of the das and there's 1 screw and a cunch of clips holding in the demister panels. It'll expose the factory tweeter and the mount for it. Probably less than an hour's work.
As for sopund difference, I don't know whether the positions would make a huge difference. In reality, they are both about the same height, just one is half a foot farther away from you.
The quality of the tweeters is probably only as good as you're willing to spend, regardless of being adjustable or not. You'll tell the difference between some cheap JB HiFi speakers or some top quality ones. IMO, the one set of speakers you shouldn't skimp on is the fronts, where you are![]()

Yeah true point. Im going with some Boston and rockford and fosgate gear anyway. Ive never skimped out on audio. Last install was 6.5k lol! But this time going for subtle but impressive install!

If you're looking for something other than the factory spots, try up on the A pillars, this is a very common spot for tweeters through many cars not just commodores. Though they will be a custom job, and take a fair bit of work. Looks sweet when done thoughnot to mention much better height in your soundstage.

Just from my personal experience...the stock tweeter location goes fine..although mounting there would look pretty sweet...I dunno if it would really change much...unless you put them in the pillar like sweefu said...and higher...it is more an appearance thing I guess...
Each to there own...
But it helps to experiment and try different places...maybe have them plugged in and tape them in different places to get an idea?
Just me thought...
Yeah will try that kcpwns. Picked up some rf gear hell cheap. Gonna miss the stock stacker though lol

The stock positions are designed properly. Unlike the older ones. The mounts point both tweeters at the rear view mirror which in theory creates a much better sound stage than directly into the centre at door height or at the windscreen.
Every set of tweeters is different and will sound so in different positions. lots of guys swear by installing them in the kick panels too
The further from your ears the tweeters are the better the imaging will be. Too close and you will hear the drivers side speaker more than the left one. I have Alpine splits in my CV8 and the tweeters are in the factory position and they sound great.
Factory positioning for tweeters in VY's is really good. As m1lky said "it's desinged properly". I've got the tweeter and mid of my 3 way's mounted in the factory positions and it sounds great. I did have alpine 2 way splits before this and that was really good too. It's always interesting to see people trying new things though so if works for you on the vent go with it. It's your ears you have to keep happy!
Dear god.
People saying audio is in mind when cars are designed are delusional. Ive got tweets in the vents, and theyre fine. With proper time delay, you could have speakers right next to you and it will still sound fine...

Designed properly compared to alot of cars on the market. Of course it's not perfect
The sail panel that you're talking about is one of the worst locations unless your head unit allows time alignment/delay processing. This is because the driver's side tweeter is extremely close to you compared to the passenger one... If you put them in the stock location or in the kick panel the distances are getting closer together and don't REQUIRE time alignment/delay.
If the tweeters are mellow sounding, then the stock position works great. If the tweeters are brighter (~louder), then the kick panel works well if the tweeters are aimed properly.
I had Dynaudio splits (known for mellow tweeters) with the tweeter in the stock location and then changed to Boston Z6's and put the tweeters in the kick panels aimed at the opposite side seat head rest. They sounded great down there and all my passengers thought the tweeters were in the stock location.
I dont recall anyone saying audio was in mind when cars where designed. It was a simple discussion of postioning. I'm with StoneX, That would be possibly the worst place for a tweeter with out time alignment. But it is also each to there own choices. The A pillar would be a much better place for stage height. It looks good but if the pods are to big then you have a blind spot. Factory positioning means you can run anything you want pretty much and no one can see it.
I played around with tweeter location in my VT Calais. I found the best location ( for my ears anyway) was down with the woofer angle up and forward slightly( yes, forward not back). I found the tweeters to be too bright up high. I do have a considerable amount of time alignment and correction at my disposal though.
This positioning would be very dependent on the tweeter you have, to have this sounding good you would need a bright tweeter to start with (as you said) .. Similarly you can mount bright tweeters in the stock positions very off-axis, and still have great imaging without the harsh sound.
