Hi guys
Im not sure if this question is ment to be in this place but ohwell...
I am going to purchase 2 subs for my VE commodore. I want a really good sound system with a budget of 4.5 GRAND max( Sub, Amp, Speakers)
I decided for the ALPINE TYPE X which was good on price aswell, but then i was told that ALPINE TYPE R is better? Is this true ????
Also for about that price what other system would you go for? NOT INCLUDING INSTALLLING OR HEAD UNIT
Cheers
Hussy
$4500 is a good budget. Check out Clarion. I love all their stuff. And the speakers are so crisp and clear.
For $4500 I wouldn't be going near any Clarion gear. Alpine make decent gear, although i'm personally not a fan of their speakers (tweeters mainly). The type-x is their top gear, though in a ported box a type-r sub may seem to hit harder. If the budget allows, and you want Alpine, for the the Type-x or even the DDL range. Would you consider other brands?

I think the type X gear is more sound quality orientated than the type R gear. Who ever told you that , that is just their opinion, and is not facts, and the only way to know would be to listen to them yourself.
Firstly i wouldn't buy anything until you had a decent signal proccessor. With the remaining budget i would then start looking at other components.
Why 2 subs rather than one better one? 2 subs will offer more output (sometimes, not always the case though) one better quality sub is going to be a better quality performer.
Out of the budget i would dedicate the most to your front stage, and just going with a decent sub that compliments the rest of the system. But that would suit my taste, and listening needs, and not always every one elses.
wow $4.5k for speakers amps and subs is heaps. can certainly get some quality gear for that, at that price point i don't think Alpine should even come into play
but firstly what are you trying to achieve? SQ, SPL or a mix of both?
personally being an SQ person I would probably spend that budget in the following way
Crescendo Opus 9.6 splits ($1299)
Morel Ultimo 122 sub ($898)
Genesis Profile 4 Ultra amp ($868)
Genesis Profile Sub Ultra amp ($898)
that comes in at $3963 retail and would make an absolute killer system, comes under budget and you should be able to negotiate it even lower at street price
add a good headunit that can do 3 way active and you would be laughing
cant go wrong with Focal
Just asking, why not Clarion?
Dynaudio splits, soundstream subs, diamond audio amps - all good choices.
I'm not a fan of alpine gear - except their PDX series of amps.
The PDX series of amps all though nice, i can't pick with my ears between them and similar powered amps costing less, and i've listened to a fair bit of gear. Unless i have cloth ears, to me the amp is the least important factor out of any build.
You would most likely find there is a point where a better set of speakers would become un-noticable because of the standard source. That's why i suggest adding a signal processor.
dont get a type x sub, they are one power hungry sub for what their output is.
They use a heap of power n make bugger all noise for that amount of power.
Do have clean sounding low bass notes, but top end is bit crappy and need low pass filter set lower then most woofers
I just upgraded from 2x type x 12's to some soundstream t5 12's
T5s are not as smooth sounding but output has increased alot.
Id look at morel, cresendo gear if u want good sq
ALPINE SPX-17PRO CAR AUDIO 6.5 INCH SPEAKERS SET TYPE-X | eBay
if ya want type x 6.5 splits i bought mine from these guys off ebay for just over $400 (shipping included) pretty good deal considering the shop that sells them near me want $1000 for the same speakers
I have had Alpine and Pioneer head units and prefer Alpine and have them in both cars. If I were buying again that is what I would look at. Amps I think Alpine does not necessarily represent good value for money. Not that their up market gear wouldn’t be very good but I think you can do better for the cash. I recently picked up a JL Audio XD600/6 digital amp. I also have their subs which I do recommend. I have Alpine Splits which sound great but there are many good sounding speakers out there. As stated Morel, Focal, Dynaudio are all well credentialed manufacturers with a vast experience in domestic speakers.
Also as stated Clarion, Kenwood, Sony tend to concentrate on price driven lower end gear so with your budget I would look elsewhere.
I have alpine Type R 6"s in 2 front doors, tweeters, 6x9''s in the Parcel Shelf and 2 15" subs, powered by 2 PDX series (forget the number) amps.
For one, it's loud, headache comes quite easily, but as someone stated before, the tweeters aren't the best. Sort of 'pierce' your ears loudness. I'm sure this could be countered by putting a layer of fabric over the top of the tweeter, I just haven't yet.
But as for type R's. I love them. Loud, beautiful quality, not a bad price, I paid much under $4000.
Installed it all myself.
As for the X series, its the highest Alpine series.
S-> R-> X
I would definitely recommend them, just try sort something out with the tweeters.
I've got alpine type R 6.5" splits in my VE ute and I'm quite impressed with the sound quality, and I'm going to get an Alpine MRP-F600 amp to power the splits and a sub.
As said in an earlier post I would definately get a sound processor like the Rockford fosgate 3.sixty or the JBL MS8, and dynamatt would be a good investemnt too.
If your want two subs make sure your mid range speakers are amped because the bass will be overpowering especially if you get 2 12" type R subs, I had 2 12" poineer sub in my VY and the bass was very overpowering as I didn't amplify my midrange speakers.
If you get Type R series you wont be dissapointed in my opinion and if it was my car I would be looking at getting a custom install done in the boot to house the subs.
