Hey guys,
recently just had the stereo done in my VE. the following is what i had installed:
SSV screen (modified to have rca's)
quasi media hub ipod module
hertz hsk165 splits
hertz hcx165 coaxials
2x type r 12' subs
alpine v power monoblock for subs
alpine 4 channel pdx for door speakers
obviously it is a massive improvement from the terrible stock system. but after having everything run from an alpine iva-w502 in my old car (double din dvd player) it just doesnt sound quite as good (and i had type r speakers in my old car). the main thing being it just doesnt go quite as loud, quality is great but just not loud enough.
also the quasi media hub ipod module is a big improvement from the stock system but far from perfect. you cant scroll straight to a certain letter you have to scroll through everything just to get to the letter 'r' for example. and the engine whine can get annoying too.
so i was tossing up between two options. install a single din aftermarket head unit under the ssv screen so i can use that for playing music from my ipod. i was tossing up between these two:
MVH-8250 Digital Media Receiver with 3-inch Screen - Pioneer Car Stereo - Digital Media Receiver
or
Alpine Electronics of Australia
then just run my system from the aftermarket head unit. i know i would lose the rear ac vents but that doesnt bother me too much. another thing i was curious to know is if i was to choose the pioneer head unit, would i be able to play the videos from my ipod on the ssv screen rather then the 3inch screen on the pioneer head unit.
OR
option 2 would be to install some kind of signal processor like the 3sixty.2 or audison bit10. and just live with the quasi ipod module.
sort of leaning towards putting a new head unit in though.
all opinions welcome!
cheers
When you mention its not loud enough, what are the gains on the amplifiers set at? Was the system DIY or installed by a pro?
My VY Berlina Build Thread - Mainly Stereo

its was done by a pro, the guys down at no limit. and i dont know what the gains are set at, a mate asked me the same thing and i asked him to have a look at it but he couldn't find out how to adjust the gains?
I would say the gains to low. The gear you have seems pretty good.
Welcome to the internet where people have opinions that you might not like
had a good look at the amps and still couldnt find a knob or anything of sort to adjust the gains.
any opinions on the single din under the stock head unit? i wanna see one with a custom facia as well cause the ones i have seen have a massive gap underneath it and the middle console.
To adjust the gains on your Alpine Amp, you have flip up the black cover at the front.
You don't need a single din. Once you locate the gains and all the other stuff under the cover, you will have banging sound.

I had No limits mod my VE SSV head deck for RCAs......$300, poor out put, (Read unusable different to you) crackling, engine whine was just terrible.
Then I went to Phreddy at ASR (found here in fact) to get it done right. Phreddy opened the unit in front of me and showed me the issue, promptly fixed it and I've been stoked ever since.
Shame about No Limit cause I wanted to spend big with them and get VIM, HDD etc but just too concerned after seeing what they did with round 1 so no round 2.
They DID give me a full refund (less postage) and less the 6 CDs they ruined by taping them together with racing tape which stripped all CDs of their layersOf course all original CDs didn't have copies in the player at the time dammit

I've done a little digging around for you mate. There isn't knobs sticking out of the PDX like I thought there might be, the gains look like this:
And the Alpine V Power monoblock:
You may have to turn your sub box around to get to them though.
