My 2003 VY SS, 6sp manual
My new stereo installation (almost complete still need to make a bottom board to hide the wires on the amps and install my 2 pairs of splits into the doors.
system consists of:
Headunit - Kenwood double din DVD/NAV - (DNX7320)
Amplifiers - Kenwood 1800w MONO - (KAC-9104D)
- Kenwood 600w 4channel - (KAC-8404) - Bridged putting out 180wRMS x 2 per amp
Subwoofers - Kenwood 1500w dual voice coil - (KFC-W3514DVC) x 2
Speakers still to come, undicided - open to suggestion...... Options that i have thought out are:
option A - kenwood KFC-X1730P splits in both front and rear doors running off the amps bridged over 2 channels each speaker
option B - kenwood KFC-X1730P splits running bridged on one of the 4 channel amps in the front and running off the other amplifier a set of 6" speakers in the rear doors and a pair of 6x9's in the parcel tray
thoughts on the 2 ideas would be greatly appreciated.![]()
Option A. No 6x9's with subs.
I'd get some better speakers than Kenwood though... They're where most of your sound is going to come from so it's best to buy something good, especially for the front![]()
Nice looking system there. Just one suggestion that youre probably looking to do anyway.......make up a cover panel for the amp rack, with windows so the amps show and the capacitor.
As far as speakers go. By the sounds of it youve got your mind set on Kenwood, so theres really no point me suggesting any other brands
But, seeing as youve got 2 x 4ch amps to power speakers, i'd be going with a set of those splits for the front, powered off one amp (bridged of course). Now depending on what youre after in the end, you could install a set of 6x9s in the parcel shelf, just high pass them at 100-120hz, possibly higher to stop any interference with the subs. This would give you maximum volume but will draw the sound stage rearwards (sound starts to come from behind you, rather than in front which is ideal). If youre more after sound quality then maybe a set of coaxials in the rear doors and leave the parcel shelf empty. On second thoughts remove the metal sections covering the 6x9 holes to help bass getting into the cabin.

in regards to the cover panel, im going to be making one which will go just under the metal panls which come off the amps at the bottom to cover the wires, not going go a full panel just to allot for a bit more breathing room for the amps at the top.... as thats where all the fans are for the amps.
Main reason for the kenwood stuff was because i already had 1 of the four channels and the 2 subs, purchased the 1800 because my kenwood 1000 mono died recently.
I was going to go with rockford fosgate splits front and rear but because half the purpose of the system was to show what we sell and custom bits and pieces we can do at work was, so i thought id stick with the kenwood, one of the other guys at works putting a system in his VE ute which will be fosgate splits in the front, option audio 5channel amp and a rockford fosgate 3sixty.2 signal processor running off the system. (I work at autobarn)
with removing the 6x9 holes, would you cut out the sections in the parcel tray and put in the speaker grills in there as well to assist in the opening into the cabin?.
leave the parcel tray fabric. directly under the tray is two oval holes with a piece of steel that has been lightly welded on, just take those off, the bass will definitely enter the cabin better, mate of mine did this in his VY worked well.
You can add the grilles if you like, definitely cant hurt.
I wasnt having a go at you about using all Kenwood, its needed sometimes to maintain consistency throughout the install. I am actually about to install a system in a VX commodore which consists of Alpine h/u and speakers. But the boot will have a Kenwood 12 and the two amps you have, the mono and the 4 ch. This is once again for consistency.
Good luck with it, be sure to post up pics when its all finished![]()

Hey guys great page.
Was jus wondering if anyone could help me out on seeing if my idea in my head is actually practical. i have installed sound systems in mine and my friends cars quite a number of times however i have little clu the meaning of why i do stuff just via practice. and on all occasions they have been old cars <95 and have already had modified head units and so it was not hard to change.
However my situation is. I have a VZ Executive 05 wagon nd i want to change the head unit, add an additional 2 speakers in the boot. i have an sub aswell that i wish to install. i have an amp that can power both the additional speakers and the sub. i also have a pioneer 2din dvd head unit . my idea is that i wish to put the head unit in, keep the factory speakers and connect my amp so i can run my sub and the additonal speakers in the rear . is this possible? and wat wud be the outcome?
thanks btw im very new to this whole forum thing. great idea but.
That was a little bit confusing, from what i gather, you want to leave your front speakers to be powered off the new DVD head unit, and add speakers in the rear tailgate section?
If that the case, then there is nothing stopping you from doing this. It's just a matter of connecting the RCA's from your new head units rear pre-out (assuming it has one) to your amps remaining channel inputs.
But, why would you want to do this? From where your sitting in the drivers seat, you won't notice any improvement.Fitting your largest, most powerful, and only amplified speakers, the furthest possible distance away from you is a bad idea.
BTW you posed in the wrong section, this is for posting pictures of your current setup. You might want to start a new thread in the car audio section, that way you well get more visit's, and we won't clog up this one with replies to the question.
hey thanks for that. sorry bit of a noob at this whole forum thing dnt quite no my way round.
quick question. will the stock speakers run off the new head unit . like doesnt the car have a stock amplifier for the speakers? and i want them at the back because i sit out the back in the tailgate a bit with my friends.
Now it makes sense, you just want to jam out in the tailgate section when your pulled up, beachside ect.
All head units have a built in amplifier, even your factory one. However, they are a small amplifier.Usually within the vicinity of 10-15 watts RMS per channel. You can run any speaker, off any amplifier, regardless of the amps power output, or the speakers rated input. However, to get the most performance out of any speaker, then obviously it will require a certain amount of power.
So whatever speakers you have in the front, can be connected to your head unit, but will just be limited to the head units power output, and tuning capabilities.
So, once it's all done, you can expect slightly better sound up front due to your aftermarket head unit basically being a better sound source than your factory unit. The tailgate area will sound most likely as you are expecting to.
Thanks mate. Legend![]()
lol, blown either the sub or the Crossfire.. shame
edit: incorrect. just broke the dust cap loose on the subglue ftw

Some nice looking work there axemurderer. Did you design the enclosure yourself? Do you have the spec's on it?
How does it sound?
yeah designed and built it all by myself but cant really remember any of the specs on the box, sounds alright for my first attempt at an install and is louder that the 2 12's which i had in a sealed box i had before.
Hey there axemurderer, nice install there mate......... for the port i would paint the inside of the box where the port is matt black, that will take away from the look of the bare craftwood. As for the boot hinges you can use the hair from cheap paint brushes and staple that to the front cover panel on the back of the panel..... takes away from the gap you have their now...
If you need anymore help or info just ask...
Cheers

Oh and as for any of the edges just use some matt black paint and carefully brush it on.....

You didn't list your front speakers... And you listed all max power ratings, what are the actual ratings?

Hmmm interesting way of spelling 'executive'.
