I recently got this head unit put in and its been working fine for around 2 months.. then at the same time my brake booster started leaking my speakers started crackling when i brake downhill.. then they would cut out and all i can hear are my subs then the second i release the brake pedal everything works fine again... In the past week the stereo now tries to turn on my speaker makes a quick noise through the left speaker which sounds like the amp turning on then i get an error "Miswiring - check unit and reset" so ive checked the troubleshooting and it tells me my speaker wires need to be checked everything seems to be fine.. however when i disconnected the battery to do the wire check after i connected the terminals again it worked for half an hr started crackling at braking then cut out again.. This is driving me nuts.. Could this be as simple as a bad earth somewhere or a wire behind my brake pedal ( i cant seem to find any random wires there btw) or is it possibly related to the brake booster? sounds crazy to me but i have to ask i figure anything is possible!... the crackling only comes from my left rear speaker too.. the magnets on my speakers actually touch metal where they sit but from what ive read that isnt a huge problem and certainly wouldnt cause this issue. Any advice on what else to check would be great possibly an earth i dont know about? i'm not overly educated in electrical stuff altho i have figured out how to use a test light so advice in dummy terms would be good heheheAnd i really want to know if its possible its linked to the brake booster leaking or am i just unlucky to have both go at the same time :/
Some paragraphs would make your post easier to read.
Magnets touching metal could be solved with a bit of tough plastic.
I would firstly check if your speaker cables are run under the carpet below the brake pedal. It is possible you have worn through the insulation.
are the rear speakers mounted properly? sounds like downhill braking could be causing the rear left speaker to move forward, and shorting the speaker terminals against the metal parcel shelf.
hi yes sorry mint i wanted to make sure i included anything else going on in my car just incase it was possibly related and then i got fed up and posted it before i looked at it again and decided to change something lol.. my bad...i tend to over explain things alot![]()
So anyway, no i ran the speakers wires over the steering column and then down the side trim and ive checked the wires all the way from the head unit to the rear speakers and it all seems fine... i dont have door speakers as they wont fit so theres nothing getting crushed in door hinges etc.... i also checked the wires upto the front standard dash ones and they are all good too... ive checked every wire the autobarn guy did when he put the head unit in and they are all individually taped etc as well...
Hi Hakhawk! my rear speakers actaully run vertical to the back seat instead of horizontally as holes were already like that when i got the car which sux as thats why the magnets hit the body but the connections are not touching anything and my speakers dont move at all they are definietely in there solid!
I think ive checked nearly everything in the bloody car lol... could this be as simple as a dodgy head unit maybe i should just send it off to autobarn and let them deal with it.. i have noticed the manual for the headunit has a picture of an earth going to the battery negative terminal i dont have an earth going to the terminal only to the body near my fuse box would that be a problem? i would hope the installation guy would know what he's doing lol...
Definitely sounds like speaker wire or speaker terminal are being ground when you brake... No fault in the head unit could cause that. I know you said you've check everything, but I hear that all the time and it's exactly what they claim to have checked. Double check everything again.
Lol... ok... i'll do it again... Is there anything else to check that i havent mentioned?
well the stereo started working again after checked allthe wiring down the front and i reconnected the battery and then i lost the speakers again but the sub remained on so i got to play around with the speaker wires... and before it cut out witht the usual errors i touched the rear speaker mounting screw with the screwdriver and it turned back on ... cut back out as soon as the screwdriver was not touching again.... so i'm guessing now all i have to do is replace the negative connector coz theres nothing else left to pull apart?
replaced the connections on the speaker wires and still no change i guess all thats left is my speaker itself...
disconnect the rear speakers, and make sure the wires wont touch steel/each other
see how it goes, if it continues, its elsewhere(maybe do the same on front speakers), if it stops, its the speakers.
another thing to look at could also be the smallest of wires poking through the tape behind the headunit, and sticking into another speaker wire. roll each taped wire in between your fingers, if you get a jab from wire, fix it.
thanks hakhawk!! it ended up being my rear left speaker! The magnet was touching on the car precisely where the little wires go around the magnet and into the centre of the magnet itself, so the car has rubbed through the insulation on the negative wire and was down to the last wire....i guess this has slowly happened over the last year coz it was really neatly rubbed away..
I do have one last question for you and that is, does anyone fix these little wires or is it best just to buy new speakers?
For the time spent stuffing around you could probably just buy a new speaker.
Welcome to the internet where people have opinions that you might not like
yeah sounds like a good idea.. i forgot to say thanks! so thanks everyone!!![]()
