Default Worth going 2 S types sealed box to 2 R type ported box

Is there much difference from S type to R type? Getting bord with my system so thinkin bout upgrading. Would it be worth changing from S types to R types or puting more S types in?

Neither, go for a better subwoofer, not made by alpine. For the price, they leave a lot to be desired.

If you want to not be bored, I cannot recommend the Image Dynamics IDMAX subwoofer enough. Two of these will blow you away.

About the 18inch i still need boot space and i still do like quality that i get that with my s types but would r types be worth the upgrade for quality and bass? (back to the start of the tread)..... Alpine has always been good for me so sticking to it might not be what use think but be s**t if we all had the same ideas.

More type-s is absolutely not the option, more entry level gear doesn't equal better gear. I'm guessing you want very loud sub bass - fair enough, whatever floats your boat. What sort of budget are you looking at?

2 x 12'' is 24'' cone surface area, so what's the difference, the 18 would fit no worries.

It's about the same price as a single Type R, but it will make you realise what looking outside the box can get you. I've installed an IXL 10 in to an Astra, and an IXL 12 into a focus sedan, i haven't found a sub yet for similar money that competes, regardless of the application.

If the remaining two 18's are still in stock in a few months time (they probably won't be) i'll snap them up for HT duties.

Going to be a big box in your living room, best go an IB setup through your wall into your bedroom :P

There's only a minority of people on here who don't think Alpine is the bees knees (mainly due to the fact we are willing to trial other highly respected gear). So you have the same idea of the other idiots who waste their money on sub-par products from alpines speaker/woofer range.

No offence or anything, you just should creep outside of the box, and go with what we advise. IDMAX woofers are said to be far better than the Type X woofers, if that comparison means anything to you. You can pick them up on eBay for roughly $450 from the US. That Mach woofer will satisfy your bass needs a lot more than an Alpine unit will.

I think the IDmax is overkill in this case, they are an awesome SQL woofer but I don't think it suits the OP's needs very well, its overkill. Something like the Mach 5 18" would be awesome in my opinion, though harder to fit than 2x12" woofers for obvious reasons (though i've seen that exact sub in a VY boot before, no worries)

Before I suggest anything, I'm going to wait for the OP to reply with a budget, and a reason why he is looking to upgrade in the first place.

    To the OP:
    1. What are you looking for with an upgrade?
    2. What box are the subs in at the moment?
    3. What amplifier is running them?
    4. Is the stereo tuned to its best capability?

It could be as simple as building a box with higher output, or tuning the system some more.

Going to be 2 big boxes !! I've built a threatre room, well i'm still going with it. If i get the IXL 18's i'll most likely use one of either side of the room, behind the lounge. They would be in basic ported enclosures for simplicity. If the thread goes no where i'll upload some pics of what i've been up to.

Im looking for more cleaner bass don't really no how to explain but iv herd 1 12inch in a ported box and it sounded heaps better then my 2 so i no i goto go ported. The subs are in a sealed box that came as a kit with the subs. With the amp i did change to Soundstream but took allot of pressuring by the guy at Alberts and its a 1200watt amp dont really no anything else about it and the tuning should be good because it was done at a shop but i wouldn't have a clue where to start with looking at tuning a car stereo. With money r types is as much as i would go maby abit more but nothin like x types

I love entry level gear, I can't justify spending any more than that.

Why quote me for and hit me with the banstick? This isn't the first time you have done this either.

If he's going to build and tune two ported enclosure's for 12'' drivers, then there's fk all difference worth even worrying about if the was to just use the 18 in a sealed enclosure as far as taking up space is concerned.

I try to give him a cheaper and simpler option.

Someone who is truly concerned about retaining some boot space wouldn't be fitting two 12'' drivers in the first place. The driver i reccomended is a good option, is well within the OP's budget, will sound much better than his original plan, and could even save him money.

I like some entry level gear too, money isn't the biggest factor when it comes to car audio, I agree. I've achieved first place in Novice SQ with a $139 front stage, there is your proof. The OP is looking to upgrade something, if you look at the questions I asked, I'm not suggesting he change subs, I suggest he look at all the other factors of his stereo beforebuying anything new.

You didn't read any of the replies at all did you?

The audio sub forum has gone to shit with all you people posting questions and then ignoring the advice given by those with experience. We give you some options, and reasons why they might better, why not look further into them?

So sick of people just sticking to the fully sick brands too :\

More subs will sound louder, not better. Just buy the bloody type r or listen to us, but we all know that won't happen. Just stick with your fully sick Alpine stuff and get the type r.

Use guys r the ones that didn't read the first post u just chucked your input in which was fine until everyone puts there opinions in and has nothing to do with the O.P. No offence

You said you were getting bored with your current setup, often you don't need to buy more gear, rather work with the gear you already have.

These are the differences between the Type S and Type R 12's

Have been pumpin my subs lately and noticed that there is not much change from mid to high volume. Also got shamed out by a magna with 1 soundstream 12" sub in ported box and it sounded better then both of my subs. What do use think about putting 2 12" type R in and keeping the 2 type S also???

I'd just make a decent box for your type-s .. You still haven't said what amp they are running off .. maybe yours are getting 100wrms and the magna was getting 2000wrms

The guy driving the Magna probably followed some advice given to him on a forum somewhere
