i was looking at buy subs for my car and i couldnt decide what i wanted or which was better.
my choice is between Sony Xplod and Kicker and JL Audio..
heres what im looking at.
Sony Xplod
Sony 12" 1000 Watt Sub In Box - Subwoofer - JB Hi-Fi - Smashing Prices!
Kicker
Kicker 12" Sub & Ported Box - Subwoofer - JB Hi-Fi - Smashing Prices!
JL Audio
Jl Audio 12" 300 Watt RMS Sub In Box - Subwoofer - JB Hi-Fi - Smashing Prices!
Defiantly not Sony,
Best bet is probably JL Audio from what i've heard, otherwise Kicker
BTW probably better to post in the audio thread next time![]()
yeah eww Sony haha, i have had both kicker and jl.. and id say defs JL
haha yeah i posted this then realised it wasnt in Audio !
but yeah i was looking at buying this sub
JL - CP212W0-2 SLOT PORTED HIGH OUTPUT ENCLOSURE FITTED WITH - Loaded Enclosures - Car Sub Woofers - Car Audio
not from that website i just used that as an example so i could show you, if i buy it i will be ordering it in from JB HI-FI.
I'd rate the JL as being the better, and the Kicker on par with the Sony, the Kicker being the over priced it usually is.
If you wanting to spend $270, and you had to pick out of the 3, i'd go with 2 of the Sony units. Simply because neither of those drivers would really perform that well in a vehicle the size of a Commodore, so i'd want as much cone surface area as possible for the money spent.
Otherwise, if you can build an enclosure, and have the tools ect on hand, then $30 worth of MDF will go a lot further with a $200-250 driver.
But neither driver has any sort of specs listed which is what you get when you go to places such as JB, so how do you know if they are suitable for your amplifier. Your call....
What are you running it off?
In an ideal world the jl would be my pick.
However if you're running a sealed box with not much power the Sony will give you the best bang for buck.
If you're willing to spend around the $300 mark, what about the VIBE Slick series 12" passive sub in box?Cant remember how much exactly it is (can get back to you tomorrow). But it will be a lot better sub than the Sony, can't comment on the kicker and JL as I don't sell their gear.
I'd recommend one of these. POLK AUDIO DB1212 12" 2 Brother has one in his car and it goes alright.

hold up on the subs for now.. first find out what amp he has or if he has one already? before you give your opinions on the subs
I have JL subs and a JL amp and can recommend them. Not as flashy as some of the others but the sound is more important anyway.
and the the other comment, i do not have an amp i was going to buy an amp when i buy a sub
when i had a single 12" in my commodore, i could barely hear it
(but it was with a cheap sub in one of them cheap sealed boxes you'd find at strathfield) then when i ran a single JL 12" in its ported box it was much louder which was good for some background bass with the music

It will come down to clean output. Think how any set of speakers would perform in different sized environments.
If you had a very small car, not only would any given component be louder, but it would be clearer as your not demanding as much from it. Throw a cheap driver in a rather large vehicle, and then add some road intrusion noise, all of a sudden you might find it doesn't have enough output to be heard clearly.
That's why out of the three listed, i would be going with 2 of the cheapest. Any sound quality attributes one might have over the other, would most likely go out the window once you have to push the driver harder to perform.
Here's the best advice you'll hear:
GO DOWN TO THE STORE AND LISTEN TO THE SUBS INDIVIDUALLY, WITH YOUR CHOICE OF MUSIC AND MAKE A DECISION BASED ON YOUR EARS.
Subs sound different in open air as oposed to a sealed car though. As well as depending on the box. That works great for speakers not so much for subs.
Can you provide more info?
Do you already have an amp? If so what?
Do you have a box? Will you build it or buy it? Sealed or ported?
while that’s fair enough you are really not able to tell how a sub will perform in the environment of a car. It’s a bit of hit and miss. Personally I tend to read reviews and choose a reputable brand. I rekon most people would struggle to tell the subjective difference in sound quality between the three mentioned at the end of the day.
The Kicker is actually one of the better sounding and loudest low priced ported prefab subs. I've listened to it against various brands side by side and it came out on top. There was no JL being compared though and I've always liked JL gear so that's my choice of the 3 options![]()
While you are right, you can still get some idea on the differences. You will be able to hear what the sub does and doesn't do well, get a bit of an idea on the subs power handling, which is louder, and so forth.
Of course once the sub is in the car it will no doubt sound better, but you can still compare to some extent subwoofers in large open environments.
