class AB amplify between 180 to 360 degrees of the input signal (two transistors are used to conduct full signal) and they are 75% efficient. They also have reasonably low distortion figures.
class D amplify the signal in an on/off mode, and are not always digital. Class D are highly efficient (about 80-95%), however generally produce more distortion. this is negligible however, as this distortion is not audible in the lower frequency ranges which class D subwoofer amplifiers produce.

    What jds303 said.

Also, class d amps (monoblocks) typically have beefier power supplies and more subwoofer features, such as subsonic filters.

the class d don't have beefier power suuplies, they are just more efficient.
You put you left foot in, your put your right foot in , you take your left foot out and you slide it all about!

Hey thanks jds303 that was a good read, now i know that if you want high effeciancy, its a very good idea to get a class D amplifier, but one more question??

Subsonic filters? most amps i read about have them, but are they good or bad for spl? beacause one day when i was listening to bass mekanics cd it mentioned that subsonic filers are bad!

    no worries.
a subsonic filter is a feature that filters out frequencies below which the human ear can detect, which is 20Hz. some amplifiers you can select what frequency you want the filter to cut out. subsonic filters are generally used for sq purposes, when you don't want the woofer to play frequencies that arent usually audible. this means less cone movement, and higher fidelity (to the human ear). as SPL is measured with an electronic device, it will measure at frequencies lower than what humans can hear. therefore, if you are playing tracks with lots of low end bass, then for SPL subsonic filters may produce lower SPL. (bearing in mind this will be maximum SPL at no particular frequency, whereas SPL comps usually use set frequencies for measurement. of course, this all depends on if your system is capable of out-putting subsonic bass).

i just bought rims for my car and trailer, next on my list is lowering my car, then to the cranking sound, do most amplifiers these days have subsonic filters?

you would have to check the amplifiers specs as to whether it has a subsonic filter or not.

Subsonic filters are important for ported enclosures. If a ported enclosure is tuned in the higher subbass regions, it can be damaged if it is forced to play frequencies sufficiently below the tuning frequency at high power levels. This is caused by over excursion of the cone. A subsonic filter can be used to prevent theses frequencies from reaching the sub and thus protect it.

This is not a problem with sealed enclosures unless you make them ridiculously large.

The same damage may occur if you try to run a sub in free air with enough power.

Most modern monoblocks i.e. sub amps will have a subsonic filter.
