Hi all,
I am in the process of upgrading the sound system in my VX exec, and I am getting the head unit, front speakers and amp for them installed on Friday. I am planning on building a custom sub box before then, so I can plug my sub in after I get the rest installed on Friday afternoon. I have decided to just reuse the sub and amp I had in my old car (Lancer) for now to save money, but I am not sure if the box I have drawn up will be too big for it.
The dimensions currently are 1000 x 230 x 370 externally, and I was planning on using 16mm MDF for it, so internal dimensions would be 968 x 138 x 338 in the way I have it designed.
In the installation guide that came with the sub (Sony xplod XS-L120P5A) it says that the recommended volume for the enclosure is 81.7L. If my calculations are right, mine has an internal volume of 64.8L. I only ask if it is too big because of a comment made by someone on my My Ride thread, and also because in the Lancer it was only in an enclosure that was just bigger than the subwoofer itself and didnt sound too bad. I'm not planning on entering any competitions with the sound system in the car, just want it to be alright to cruise in.
If it helps it will be powered by an Audioline monoblock amp with 300w RMS 800w peak, and I THINK the sub is 400w RMS, 1000w peak.
Thanks in advance.
If i was to make it so that it protruded less from the backseat, and therefore had a smaller interior volume, would it affect the sound quality greatly?
That's pretty big. Have you considered porting it, if your prepared to use that much room? You can model the responses in winisd (free software)
id port it![]()

If Cars could scream Rape, I'm sure yours just did because I just eye fuc&ed the shit out of the above images.
Sony recommend 82l? 3cubic feet for a sealed box? That seems very large even for a ported box with that sort of sub in it.
Your box at .968x.338x.138 is 45l (less sub displacement which is usually 2ish l) (1000l in a cubic metre) so that's 1.6 cubic feet. It's probably ok, just don't push the gains too high, otherwise the sub will have insufficient air pressure to restrain it and will bottom out and could be damaged.
General rule of thumb is 1-1.2 cubic feet per 12inch sealed.
I'd recommend 18mm MDF, that's the standard size people usually use for sub boxes. 16mm is what some prefab boxes use and it's not that great.
81 litres sound pretty big but if that’s what it says I guess that’s it. All that will happen if you change the dimensions is that it may not realise the full frequency response of the driver. You can stuff it with acoustic wool which may help. Ported enclosures are problematic as to realise the full potential of the port the enclosure and the port have to be very accurately measured. Sealed is easier even if you may not get the full frequency response.
Alright, thanks for all that guys.
I was surprised when I read the booklet that came with it, because I didn't for when I made the last box in my other car which would have been about a quarter of the size. I'll give it a rethink and redesign today I reckon.
I know it's digging back a bit but can you provide a link of any sort to where Sony reccomends the enclosure volumes. That size enclosure is very big for a weak 300 watt nominal sub, especially a budget one. I wouldn't be going anywhere that large to be honest, and i'd be going with a ported enclosure, your going to lose quite a bit of output from the Lancer to the Commodore.
If you send me the t/s parameters of your driver and how much room you would like to use I can design you a box.
Can you provide a pic of the specs with what they are next to them. That volume could be the vas (free air volume)
I have 2 10's running in a box almost that size with ports in it.. With the car on gas and sub box the boot is full.. Sounds great tho![]()
