    Default Audio system advice

Hi all… got a VZ SV6, the standard stereo is obviously very average to say the least. Looking to upgrade, nothing too extreme, just a better sounding system that I can turn the volume up to a decent level and get a nice clear sound without distortion etc…

I’m wanting to keep a factory headunit and steering controls as I like the factory look and functionality. I want to connect my ipod so will be getting one of those HU mods/connectors that are pretty common around here.

Any ideas? Would simply connecting better aftermarket speakers (front and back) to the stock head unit improve things?

Another thought I had was to get hold of a premium sound system from the Calais etc and install that, as it’s a factory look but I assume a better system. Can anyone with one comment on their performance, or know where I could source a new system complete?

As a bit of a guide, my old car had a decent Pioneer HU, with front 6” and rear 6x9s (no amps or subs) and that was fine for my needs, as I said I don’t need anything too extreme, just a nice clear crisp sound with a bit more volume capability…

Thoughts? A bit of unbiased advice is always good.

Thanks StoneX, that makes me think just replacing the speakers won’t offer much improvement.

Anyone have much experience with the Calais premium system?

Replacing the stock speakers will make a huge difference, if you buy a good pair of speakers and play attention to some good installation techniques.

In regards to the Calais system, I don't know much about it although I just assume it's a better headunit and more speakers? What attracts you to it? I would almost bet my bottom dollar that it will cost you top dollar and not be that fantastic at all.

Do you have a budget for this system? I think a replacement pair of front splits and a headunit will be fine at first, if you choose that you want more volume you can amp the speakers and add a subwoofer if budget permits or a pair of 6x9s if a sub is too costly.

    Thanks for the reply Magoo.

I only mention the Calais system as I’m keen to keep a factory HU, and thought it may offer a good “factory” system that would perform well. Also why I’m thinking of simply replacing the factory speakers and keeping the factory HU – I can keep a stock appearance. Just seems to be a lot of conflicting info from everyone I’ve spoken to as to whether quality speakers will make a big difference with the factory HU. If not I might as well keep the stock system.

I don’t have a budget as such but equally I’m not going to spend thousands because I don’t want or need a monstrous system, just something with clear sound and some better volume, the stock SV6 system really is useless and distorts at any decent volume.

Get the RCA mod done by Phreddy so that you can run a 2 or 4channel amp.

And buy a decent set of speakers, such as the Morel Tempo 6", I have them and highly recommend them. Compared to my mates Fusion and Alpine speakers, the Morels blow them out of the water, they go loud while remaining clear instead of sounding muddy.
