Hi All,
Got my car booked in next week to install some new speakers. Basically doing a full install but gradually..
The long term plan:
Retain factory head unit, amp a 12" sub in the boot (to replace the twin 8" subs in the shelf) and amp the front speakers and run the rears of the head unit..
The place doing it told me to expect alternator whine when i start amping the speakers & sub and i would need a hi-line converter which would eliminate the noise... but that's another $300-$400 ...
Are they required?
They bought some gear which didn't sell and they can't send it back so they are stuck trying to sell it. Go elsewhere.
If they seriously expect alternator whine no matter how they install the gear then they should not be installing.
early ve commodores(not sure if s2 fixed it) have an inherent noise issue, which im not sure anyone has found an easy solution for, its generally only when theres no songs playing though.
have seen posts about earthing the headunit differently, but havent had a chance to try it on a car since i read about it.
I have recently just done all of the above. Only difference is I had ASR Audio do the RCA mod for me. Not sure if there is someone in your area that could do it for you. I had alternator whine from the start but this was caused by the RCA plugs being a little loose and not grounded properly. All good now and worth the effort IMO.
BTW, I did the install myself and hadn't done it before so maybe try that if you have the time. Plenty of info on here for you to get it completed.
Thanks All..
Points taken on board.
"the place" you are talking about should definitely not take part in your install or anyone elses for that matter :\
