Right so the other day my subs (twin 400w speakers) stopped working. I tested all the wires to make sure power was getting to the amp and it all was, so i replaced the amp with a later model 350w Xplod (newer model than what was in there) thinking that would change it. Connected the new amp and the sub still wont work. Tried the amp with different speaker and it worked.
Next step i tried was re-wiring the speaker cables just to be sure but still cant get any sound only a very quiet crackly distorted sound. I then tried each speaker individually and they still dont work.
This is where i need help. The only things i can think of now is either the amp is not powerful enough (which is strange since it worked previously) or both speakers coincidentaly both rooted themselves at the same time.
Can anyone shed some light
Any amp will make sound through a working speaker, so it's not that your amp isn't powerful enough. It's most likely, from your fault finding, that the subs are faulty. Pull them out and measure the terminals with a ohmmeter (multimeter on ohm setting) or even gently push their cones inwards to see if they move smoothly or scratchy.
what are the subs?
There 8Zed brand. Well i was about to kick it in and buy new subs but then a mate came around so i used his setup but used my subs and they worked. The sound quality was crap (speakers are definately on the way out) but they were actually working so i quess for now i'll keep mucking around with it
How are the subs wired? If they're in series perhaps only one is stuffed. Try connect them up individually.
If you push gently on the cone do you hear scratching?
Does the amp have any indicator that it has power? If they work on your mates amp and not yours theres a good chance something isnt connected. Trace all the wiring and make sure its connected where it should be and nothing has cut through the insulation as well as checking the fuses in the amp and on the power wire itself
Is there such a thing as too much power?
I BELIEVE NOT
I'm in Adelaide, do you want me to have a look at it maybe?
Cheers for everyones help and suggestions. Finally figured out the problem. Part of the fuse holder (Obviously the part you cant see) had melted exposing the metal to the body. So the amp was getting power, But half the amount actually needed to power the subs
