long story short my friend had some subs and they were this daggy red colour, so he just resprayed the actually speakers black, it looks good and they dont seem to sound any different, but i said its probly not the best for them but he seems to think its fine, obviously you wouldnt do this to a set of $1000 subs, but if its just an old set how much damage could be done? and why would it damage them, i know it wouldnt be the best for them but why not? just want some hard hitting evidence to give to my mate...
Only think I can think of is the extra weight of the paint on the cone, which may reduce the efficiency of the sub in reproducing the bass correctly.
yeah thats what i thought but he said he just did a few light coats and said the sound didnt change at all, plus i thought the paint would crack from the sub vibrating ect but it hasnt
VHT Vinyl spray works well. Just mist it on until it covers. Bugger all added weight.
where do you get it from and how much? because i have two randem 10 inch subs i was thinking about useing until i get a new system but there ugly and was considering spraying them but not if its just going to stuff them...

Providing that the paint will not eat away at the cone then you have no problem. Best to find out what composite material the cone is made out of before you go and spray the wrong paint on it. Ie. Water based paint onto a paper composite cone, eeeeeek.
haha nah legit i had never even thought of it until he did it, and if i did think of it i wouldnt of done it thinking it would stuff them... if i didnt really have a mate that did it i wouldnt have said it, i dont need to test the waters with 'a mate of a mate of mine', he has a photo of them before and after on facebook, i might ask if i can put them up for those interested because im sure others have thought about it
If they're a crap colour, for the time being, why not make up the box you want to suit, and then just reverse the subs so u see the basket and not the cones.. Future proof..
Or just wait until u can get the subs u want then do it right the first time.
I wasn't suggesting u paint ur new subs, I was saying instead of painting ur crap dinosaur ones, turn them around.
How is the box setup to take the subs?
yeah i knew you ment turn the dinosaur ones around but thought you might be getting at painting my new ones, and idk there in some crappy home made box... to be honest there probly going to sound like death but i cant wait till i get my new ones and thought they'ld be worth a shot for the time being...
I say go for it, drop them in and see how they go. U don't always have to crack open ur boot! Although the lady's won't resist if u do
hahaha i just wont open the boot and ill just play them and tell the ladies there's four 18's in there, and if they want to look just jump in my car and speed off..
if they were anything but sub speakers, I wouldn't do it. The speaker cone is usually a precision designed thickness & material to produce the right frequencies, clarity etc. If you paint a paper cone speaker, you risk changing the quality of the sound.
But bass accuracy generally isn't anywhere near as crucial as mid to high range frequencies. So I would guess that any difference with a sub would be unnoticeable
thanks for all the details mate it explains alot
