    Default Vt Speakers?

Hi all, i have a stock VT commodore and i was wondering what size the standard 4 door speakers are? i thought they were 6inch but this ebay item makes me confused? it says they are 4inch? http://cgi.ebay.com.au/VT-VX-COMMODO...QQcmdZViewItem

Can someone help me out? i was thinking of getting 4x of these speakers= http://strathfield.com.au/ViewProduct.asp?ProdID=928

would these speakers make a noticable difference? i am really new to this

That says four 6" speakers and two small dash speakers (tweeters)... And is 100% correct.

Those speakers from Strathfield MIGHT sound better than stock, but I wouldn't bother.
Your car has front splits (or component speakers), this means you have a seperate woofer in the door and a tweeter in the dash. It's best to replace these with aftermarket splits as you'll get better sound.

Do you have an aftermarket CD player? Will you be upgrading in future to amps or sub/s? If you plan to upgrade later, I wouldn't buy crappy speakers as you'll just end up spending more money to replace them.

I think that the stock speakers actually do an alright job. I doubt you would see a noticeable improvement in sound quality/bass if you put a set of those sony speakers in, especially if you are just planning to run them from the stock head unit.

How much are you looking at spending?

You don’t have to get a sub or anything if you want more bass (although it does give the best results).

If I was you, I’d get a set of splits for the front and get a 2x100W rms amp to run them. leave the speakers in the back, who cares about passengers.

well can anyone reccommend a set of speakers from http://strathfield.com.au/Products.asp?CatID=170 that will make a noticable difference? i was thinking These?. and where do i buy splits from? and where do they go..... so many questions

I have the stock eurovox cd player, and dont plan on upgrading it anytime soon as this one works fine? but yes in the future i am planning on putting a sub in the boot. i am on a pretty tight budget right about now (very tight) but i dont mind spending a bit more if i know im going to get good sound.

I also thought about putting some 6x9's in the back behind the rear seat headrests, but there is carpet over the holes, im not sure if this pops out or i have to cut it? if it pops out, then how? and putting 6x9's in there is it an easy job? like is all the leads and wires there already? or will i have to get a proffessional to do it for me, because id really prefer it if i was able to do it myself.

I don’t think the wiring will be there for 6x9’s (it wasn’t for me in my executive). As for the carpet no they don’t pop out. You will have to buy a new parcel shelf with speaker grills in it. actually getting the 6x9’s in there is a relatively easy job. It takes less than a minute to pull the back seats out.

If you are getting a sub in the future I wouldn’t bother getting 6x9’s now

You can get splits from anywhere that sells car audio. I don’t know why strathfield don’t have them on their website.

How much of a “noticeable” difference are you after. Unless you upgrade you head unit &/or get an amp I really can’t see you getting much of a difference.

I’m guessing you haven’t actually been to strathfield or anywhere else yet? Take some time to go in there and actually listen to what they have. Don’t just look at speaker specs.

In my first car I has some 4” jbl 2ways in the front doors. They went hard as! As good as some 6” 2 and 3 ways. I’d take a look at these.

    http://strathfield.com.au/ViewProduct.asp?ProdID=1005

and in the parcel shelf of my first car I had these

    http://strathfield.com.au/ViewProduct.asp?ProdID=730

I had both of these speakers just running off the head unit (pioneer 4x45w)

when I got my new car I transferred the 6x9’s across to it but they didn’t seem to have as much punch in the bass in the new car. The still go quite well.

I have a coupe of friends that had these pioneer speakers in their first cars (just running off pioneer head units, 4x45w) and they went pretty well.

    http://strathfield.com.au/ViewProduct.asp?ProdID=1420
    http://strathfield.com.au/ViewProduct.asp?ProdID=1004

if I were you I’d wait until the pre and post Christmas sales. You can sometimes save a heap! In the mean time listen to what your friends have and do a bit of reading so you have some idea of what’s out there and how it all works.

EDIT - i'd stay away from sony

I would look at what other stores sell too, if possible.

A mate was installing 6x9's into his car and I was supervising It looked pretty easy to install them into the car...
Take the base of the rear seat out
Undo bolts that hold backrests of rear seats
Tap the backrest upwards to get it out
Undo things on parcel shelf and remove it then you can see the metal shelf
Pop the metal plates out that cover the 6x9 holes
Use a stanley knife to cut the perforated section out of the carpeted parcel shelf bit
Buy grilles from Autobarn for $30 a pair to put into the holes you just cut out
Run wires from where wires go into rear doors for those speakers up to the parcel shelf
    Screw 6x9's in

Sounds pretty easy until the 6x9 doesn't fit the hole in the parcel shelf... My mate spend ages jigsawing and sanding an MDF spacer to make the 6x9's actually fit the hole.

As said above, if you plan to get a sub, i'd stick with 6 or 6.5" speakers.

This is kind of a let down as im only 17 and dont have a job currently and i would have to spend quite a bit just to get some decent sound, damn i guess i should just forget about it :-\, so your sure i have to get a new parcel shelf? because it has 6x9 lines in the carpet where it looks like it pops out or i need to cut along. so if i pop in one of these: http://strathfield.com.au/ViewProduct.asp?ProdID=1352# i will get better sound without upgrading any speakers?.

Timzo, as a hint. Don't replace the speakers. Replace the headunit. Replacing the speakers will give you better quality. But, volume will suffer. Your volume will go DOWN compared to the stocks as the stocks are a high efficency speaker.

If you replace the HU then you will get Better quality sound by far MORE volume MORE bass and easy expansion for a subwoofer. You could spend about 250-350 on a new head unit and be VERY happy with it. Then, once the finances are a little better you could upgrade the speakers THEN. But, most certainly don't upgrade them now.

i actually found it was fairly difficult to cut the parcel shelf with a stanley knife. you can do it but getting it to follow that nice oval shape is a bitch. buying a new shelf would be the way to go i think. i sort of hacked holes in mine and threw an australian flag over the lot to cover it.

How much is a new parcel shelf? Everyone I know has managed to easily put aftermarket grilles in their VT/VX shelves.

Have a look on the forum, I know that question about removing the head unit has been answered a number of times. I think someone posted some pictures. I’ll give you a basic run down on how to do it. See those two holes on each side of the head unit. Bend a coat hanger into a U shape and poke it into them. that releases clips and you can just pull it out. I think you have to poke them in about 3 inches.

Like I said earlier. If you wait until closer to Christmas you should be able to save yourself a few dollars. My personal preference for head units is pioneer, but there is nothing wrong with other brands. Ask how much for cash, that can sometimes knock a few $’s off.

If you replace it yourself and don’t feel confident matching up wires, you can get adapter plugs. You shouldn’t need any extra parts apart from these and a pocket to go under it (to fill the space, it’s not a necessity but. I think you can pick them up for 25 to 30$’s)

yeah, if it's not doing anything it's probably a bad connection somewhere.

must be a big conspiracy! everyones back left speaker dies! so we all have to buy new ones, heh. No grizz i havent checked it out yet. there really is no use because i know its gonna take me an hour to get in there and then when i do get in there im gonna look and see every wire intact and perfect and not know what to do next but to take another hour to put the door skin back on, and besides the car is parked at my parents house, and i think they would chuck a mental if they seen me ripping half my door off. but i may give it a go when there not there later, if its easy enough to pull the door skin off.

please dont get sony! PLEASE! (i know, i have sonys but i was young and foolish and at a sale! )
12volt is right, the stock headunit just cant put out the juice to power most aftermarket speakers. the stock ones can really get mooving with an aftermarket h/u because the stockers are ~15Wrms and most aftermarket h/u's are ~17x4Wrms, so its a pretty good match. also the stockers dont get that horrible harsh sound that almost all 3 and 4 ways get sub $250 when you really crank them up a bit.
what about just putting some RCA's in the stock h/u and then when the budget allows just get an amp and better speakers? could be a bit of a better way to go.

My friend has a sony CD stacker in his hilux. He’s quite happy with it. says it never skips no matter how rough the track he’s driving along is. it's almost 2 years old now.

What’s that stuffed creature to the right in the photo?
