    Default Sub Problem

I recently bought the new JL audio sub 13.5" and will need 2 get a custom box made i have been quoted 170$ from (strathfield) and 240$ from (toweraudio) this is just for a box not ported or anything i was wondering if it was cheap or not or whether i can buy a 12" box and cut the hole bigger. will this give the same sound or decrease the subs performance?

The size difference shouldnt matter its only 1.5 inches and you can buy a 12 inch box on e-bay for about $80. Unless you have a massive box you shouldnt port it anyway

A typical subwoofer enclosure (or box) is made to specific measurements provided by the manufacturer of the speaker in question. If you were to buy a box not specifically designed for your speakers then the chances of it being too big/small are large, not to mention your speakers might require a ported box.

Now you could essentially obtain these same measurements and build your own enclosure. It would be cheaper in the long run but some wood working skill is required. If you are not happy to try that then really all you can do is outlay some money for what is in effect a good investment.

Having an enclosure either too large or too small can damage your speakers and will definately impact it's performance.

    Cheers

Your sub would have come with the demensions of the box needed.Compare this to a 12inch inclosure. I agree in full on compition gear it does matter but its 1.5 inches of difference i had to modify a 10inch box to fit a 12 inch sub in my boat cause its all that would fit and that runs just fine it depends what type of sound you are aming for

Joey_18 if the box is SEALED, you can do this with no problems at all. As long as the box is big enough (it probably is) then you can just shave a bit off the hole and make the 13.5 fit. With a sealed enclosure there are no real strict guidelines. If you want quick easy bass, buy a sealed box for $80 from JB hifi or any other car audio retailer and cut the hole bigger to make the 13.5 fit. Just make sure that you get a nice airtight seal around the woofer and that all screws will attach firmly and it's bound to give you great performance.

or simply build your own. look at the side of the box and see how much volume it needs and build it from there.
You put you left foot in, your put your right foot in , you take your left foot out and you slide it all about!
