    Default USB flash input

    Any audio geeks out there?

I want to replace the cheap and nasty CD radio that came with my VS. Ideally I want a unit with an AM/FM radio and MP3 player that uses a USB flash drive for input (100% solid state - no scratches on your CDs, no skipping, read errors etc etc) - something along these lines:

    http://www.caraudiocentre.co.uk/prod...?product=21285
    http://www.drgadget.co.uk/product.php?xProd=759&xSec=1

Seems a perfectly logical way to go to me. Does anyone know if Sony / Pioneer etc have anything like this in the pipeline? If so I might wait for it...

    Regards

I thought I saw Alpine advertising a new range of head units that store music. I'm not sure if it was via a USB flash drive or what.
    Maybe check their website.

Sony MEXR1($499-799) can do that all you need is a MP3 draw( $49)and it will fit in your VS too. I have one in my VX. Also the MEXR1 and read mp3's on DVD too..

Hey mate, i came accross some awesome JVC head decks whick offer the SD slot for mp3's when working at JB hifi. They start from about $550, really good quality.

Bloody Hell! So they don't believe in the KISS principal then...

Thanks, but my tastes are a lot more simple than that :-)

I've done a bit more 'net searching - Seen some (what I think are) crazy designs - dual displays that flip over - my gods - WTF would you want that for?

Sony have one (but not here it seems) with a detachable display that has the flash memory and a USB port built-in. That's all well and good, but wouldn't it be better to have a choice of your own flash drives?

Remotes seem to be quite common now. Does anybody have one with a remote? Do you use it? I would be interested to hear of user's experiences...

    Thanks all

the closest you can get for simplicity and still have USB is the JVC KD-G720 but I don't think you can get it in Australia.

Yeah, I think so too. I'll have to stick to a nice simple CD based mp3 player methinks.

The Pioneer DEH-2750mp looks pretty good... $180 delivered on Ebay.

page could not be found...besides, judging by the list of features you just listed. It was more then what jazzfan wanted....simplicity.

Jazzfan, consider also a DVD player. You don't necessarily need the screen on some models..especially if the DVD is just loaded with mp3's

But honestly, if you were a real audiophile...you wouldn't use mp3's at all too lossy

You're not seriously telling me you can tell the difference between a (decently encoded - ie 128kbs plus) MP3 and a CDDA in a car doing 110km????

And no, I'm not a _real_ audiophile. That's not to say I don't want decent sound but :-)

jazzfan. I don't travel at 110km/h...I travel at about 85mph on the freeways here and yes I can. Probably put that down to the fact that my vehicles have installs that focus mainly on Sound Quality. But I can pick an mp3 a mile away

Even on my shitty computer speakers (THX certified Creative Labs speakers) I can pick MP3's. In the car I can pick mp3's and that's saying something. At 110kph I can pick the difference between a 128kbps and a 192kbps. I won't rip any CD's at less than 192kbps, and if I can I'll run it right up to 320kbs.

Of course OGG is the way to go if you can find a player which can handle it. But if you're after a head unit that can play huge amounts of MP3's, have a look at some of the JVC ones which can be coupled to their 12-disc MP3 stacker. I've got it in my boot hooked up to a KD-G615 and it ROCKS.

    G'day 12Voltking,

Not trying to be a smart-arse, these are serious questions.

Do you do any work to sound proof the vehicle from road/engine/wind noise?

Have you done a 'blind' test (I'm not suggesting you drive at 130km/h blindfolded) to see if you can _really_ tell the difference?

And finally, I take it you're not talking about the '98 corolla?

No problem with the questions bud....

Yes, all my vehicles are sound proofed. My Jeep...well, I went a little overboard with that. One of the guys and I got bored at work a few weeks ago and wondered how long it would take us too remove all the seats, carpet, headling, door panels. Lay down sound proofing materials and spray on deadener and get it all back together again. The answer? Not as long as we would tell the customer The Corolla has it's doors sound proofed. The Dodge Ram I used to own (no longer thanks to a snow plow) was entirely sound proofed like the Jeep is now)

I have actually done a blind test because like this situation. I wasn't believed that mp3's are so lossy.

Playing through a reasonable pair of computer speakers I was able to pick various music being played at various qualities. I can still define (usually) 190 but 320 I won't pick unless it is techno and the ilk that plays a lof heavy bass below 100hz. At 190 100hz and lower often detiorates. First it sounds like it has gone through a phase pedal very slowly and shallow. Then the lower you go it slows drops off in volume until it is no longer audible. The same happens with your higher end. But it is generally VERY high end that is lost that generally isn't heard in anything else other then classical. I was also tested for perfict pitch via the blindfold test....I sucked at that one

Now, guessing by your user title of jazzman. I'm guessing that you listen to a lot of jazz (ver perceptive aren't I? LOL) Jazz is based mainly on midrange tones..even the bass guitar has a lot of midrange in it. Actually....the bass guitar in any music isn't very bassy! So, in all honesty, listening to jazz...I wouldn't pick it because generally midrange notes aren't touched in the compression act of the conversion.

I have a US Audio (DEH-400?? cant rember, i will look tommorw) deck, it has a USB port on the front and a SD/MMC card slot also.

I got it from autobarn i think i payed $200, i will get back to yas

EDIT: after doin some research on the internet, i have found that this deck is just a 'rebadged & reskinned' headunit that is made out of some slave labour factory somwhere arouind the world. I couldnt find the manufactor anywhere on the net 'US Audio' but if anyone has the linky please give it to me. I have found a brand called Roadstar that have also got the same deck and 'rebadged & reskinned' the deck.
Having said all this, it does work great and havnt had a problem yet, except it does take over a minute to read a burn cd. IMO the usb port and the sd/mmc card slot on the fron does make the deck overal look tacky.

and lastly, what a RIP this product is compared to other brands flogging of the same unit.
