hi im in the market for subs just need some help. when looking at specs what does the OZ rating mean or can someone tell me which is better the higher they are? or the lower they are? e.g 160 oz is it better then 100 oz? all i know is that it relates to the magnet on the sub any help would be greatly appreciated.
It's the weight of the magnet in ounces.
1 oz = 28.35 gm.
It's just a marketing thing to make people think its better for having a bigger magnet... Bigger magnet dosn't mean bigger sound, just like bigger surround doesn't mean more excursion.
big magnet usually means more powerful speaker.
It doesn't really.
And by powerful, do you mean it can take alot of power or output alot of sound?
Speakers with high power rating usually have large magnets because the more power that flows through the coils, the stronger the magnetic field on the coil so a larger magnet is needed to control that.
But there can be efficient subs that will take very little power to get loud and these wil have small magnets.
In the end, a magnet is not a good way of determining how well a speaker will go...

really it would be better to look at the basket (cast/stamped, steel/alloyed metals) for an indication of the spekers quality. this is usually an overlooked component but realy a very important one. it must be rigid to hold the cone so that no "colourations" are heard in the speakers played frequencies yet if its too heavy it will be hard to mount and handle. exotic cone materials and magnet type and size dont give a very acurate indication as stone x said.
cool thankyou to all for the help
