Default Help me choose a system

Ok, in my VT i have a stock cd player head unit, and 4 paper speakers(front & rear). i want a new system but i know nothing about it. can someone tell me whats a good package? that will sound better than my current system and be cheap. i need a head unit(i think), 4 6inch speakers first and maybe some 6x9's and a subwoofer later.

can anyone reccomend a good setup? at a low price ($400-$700) maybe a little more tho. and from stores in perth, preferably strathfield.

probably have a look at the jaycar range.
you wont need a new h/u if you dont want because rca outputs (for an amp) can be added to the stock h/u.
if it were me, my system would look something like this:
    1 jaycar 4x50wrms amp
    1 pair jaycar kevlar splits
    1 pair jaycar kevlar coaxials
    1 10inch kevlar sub
1 jaycar amp for sub (2x80wrms)
    that should be under $700.

u can get an awesome system for under 800. it shits me. these idiots spend over 5k for a system just coz they wana tell everyone the price. u dont needa save ur pennies at all. id be getting jaycar amp and maybe sub if ya want. but go to strath and get some cheap pioneers or something. the 6x9 pioneers go hard. u dont even need a sub, the 6x9's will keep ya happy. just act like u know wat ur doin and ppl wont try and rip ya off. jaycar are the best for advice coz they arent tryin to rob ya!!!

ur sound system is only as good as your weakest component, and for "u can get an awesome system for under 800" it depends on your ears, a jaycar 4x50rms amp is no where near as awesome as a 4x200rms fosgate amp but then ur paying big dollars

u pretty much get what you pay for..
i personally dont like stratties but they are cheaper,
have a look at audiocomm or alberts car audio in perth..

depending on what kind of system u want (nice sounding or loud) spend more on the speakers or more on the amp sub, mbquarts are nice speakers if u want to pay a little more than the cheapies

yep and you have some good quality woofers that are rated at 200Wrms? any speaker that can handle 200wrms would be very inefficent.

the poor girl doesnt want to know about rockford or nakamichi or dls or anything like that. she wants a system that is good that just sounds more defined that stock. please lets not start the old argument of you dont need to spend X amount on a stereo because it all comes down to what you are happy with. since we are giving advice on a budjet system that sounds ok it really doesnt matter what you like and how much you feel a car stereo should have spent on it.

Yeah, I’d look at getting what garfa suggested except instead of a 10” sub I’d get a 12” if your budget can stretch that far.

Why would you spend 800 on that when for:

    4x50W rms amp = 200
    2x80W rms amp = 170
    6.5” precision response Kevlar splits = 150
10” precision response carbon fibre sub = 170
    OR
12” precision response carbon fibre sub = 210
    precision response Kevlar coaxials 6.5” 2way = 110

for spot on $800 (with a 10 inch sub) or for 840 (with the 12” sub) you can get something that would sound a hell of a lot better than some 6x9’s and 6” 3ways running of a head unit.

EDIT - Hmm, I just read the original post. Sorry timzo, I didn’t realize that you were looking for a new head unit also. If you want a new head unit then some good 6” and 6x9’s will probably be the way to go for the moment. I’m not sure if the stock cd player in VT acclaims have RCA outs or not. If not you will also need some hi to low level converters to go from the outputs of the head unit to the amps. the cost of wireing and that for amps will also blow the budget out a little more.

If you want four 6” speakers AND some 6x9’s you will need an amp or something to run the 6x9’s. instead of 6x9’s I’d spend the money on a sub. It will give you lower bass than 6x9’s ever will.

seeing as it seems you are after "some thing that sounds better than your current system" you can start upgrading your components one at a time.

it would seem you are after clarity over "boom boom" noise (correct me if i'm wrong)

ask around, mates with systems, grab an audio magazine and read the reviews and such, make up your mind on the pro's and con's of what you think is in your price range. also consider what type of music you usually listen to, as this may have an impact on what you buy.

don't rush out and blow your money on a "fulley sik" system whick distorts at high volume and won't last very long because it's basically cheap shite.

do your homework and you'll find it'll pay off in the end.

a decent sound system is pretty expensive but if u install it urself it saves about 400 easy , if ur willing to go for expensive stuff buy apline but otherwise from my experiance i'd refer pioneer there well known and reliable , if u want to go for a sub in the future i'd suggest getting 4 6"" splits cause 6x9's produce there own bass and when u get a sub (the cheaper way) u dun want both trying to put out both bass it just gets distorted . theres my 10 c

if you're not gonna go a sub now, id reccomend what garfa has said, but with 6x9's instead of sub and sub amp and 6" rear coaxials, and this should save you a bit with which to buy a new deck.

As for a deck, have a look at the lower end alpine, JVC, eclipse, panasonics, etc etc. Try and get a deck with at least 2 RCA preouts as it will make things easier if you decide to add a sub later (or now)

Is there any particular reason you want to buy from strathfield?? If you make the trek to jaycar (in northbridge i believe) then you'll be able to buy quality stuff for a good price.

Also, do you know how to install these things yourself?? Or know someone that can do it for you??

or, omit the rear speakers all together, run the stock rears off the head unit, get a decent 4 channel amp, decent front speakers and sub. then run the fronts and sub off the one amp, saving coin and space, and will sound just as good as most above suggestions. again, jaycar will give good bang for buck. look for a headunit with front and sub/non fade preouts from alpine/pioneer/eclipse or equivalent and go from there.
