what sort of car do you have?

if you want to put in tweeters and that you will have to buy something known as splits. a 6" woofer and a tweeter (about 1").

practically every brand makes splits so choose some and buy em. they say you shouldnt install your crossover network inside your doors because it can get wet and cause trouble.

on the crossover network you will have 6 gold terminals 2 are for incoming signal from the HU, the Xover filters the signal and sends all the high pitched noise via 2 terminals to the tweeter, all the low bass noise is sent to the woofer via the remaning 2 terminals.

if you want to install the Xover inside your doors you'll have to remove your current front speakers connect the wires from your HU to the specified terminals on the Xover, then use the supplied wires from your new speakers to connect from the specified woofer terminals on the Xover to your woofer, same with your tweeter.

tweeter mounting depends on what car you have, VU -VZ have tweeter mounts already next to the windscreen in the corners. mounting it here will mean that you will have to get the tweeter wires back into the cabin from the doors. i have a vy and i mounted my tweeters on the covers that hide the wiring for your mirrors. i have been told to bring the tweeters up to around chest to ear height. it helps with sound staging makes for clearer music.

splits can range from around $150 - $200 for cheap splits to $800 for apparently the best, i have jl audio 6.5" splits and have no problems with them at all they were $300.

oh and measure your current speakers and match that size other wise you may have to make some speaker mounts to fit the new splits. one last thing if you decide to mount your Xover in your doors be very careful not to screw in to far and hit your window other wise it will leave a nasty scratch.

Also, what splits you buy would be determined by how much power you have available for them... Just head unit power or external amp?

Crossovers are as described above, but can also have extra tweeter connections to allow for tweeter attenuation (to make them quieter). Mounting tweeters up high will give a higher sound stage, but because the right side is so much closer to your head you will have problems with getting the sound central. I generally choose mounting low, but I was lazy in my VT and just used the stock locations in the top of the dash and it sounds fine. I just needed to attenuate the tweeters so they weren't so harsh(loud).

Top sound quality cars usually have the tweeters mounted low, but aiming high and that gives better staging.

Splits range from about $150 to $10,000 Look up Rainbow Audio, they have a $10,000 set.

boston make some nice splits, as do soundstream, for under $400.
depends on the car, if you have an amp for the splits, type of music you listen to, personal taste in SQ (audition all speakers before emptying your wallet!)

there are hundreds of brands that make good sounding splits etc.
just get one that sounds good, offers a good warranty and is within your budget.

The Jaycar splits are great value for money. $150 and they compare quite well to the $300 splits around from other brands...

Do a search for them on car audio australia forums.

Kicker splits are also pretty good bang for buck but if you get fussy Focal or MB quart are a personal preference. Alpine also make excellent quality splits.
