    Exclamation Mounting Question

hey im a noob at the whole car business, seeing as im still on my L's. I have a 1992 VP and im wondering how hard it is to get 6x9's flush mounted into the parcel shelf. I had a look from inside the boot and theres no obvious mounting brackets, as people have told me there are some already in there that are only tack welded so u can hit them out with a hammer and get a perfect fit. if so, where are they and how do i go about hooking it all up?!

also while im here, i have the usual 50wx4 headunit runnin the show and im looking at gettin a 4ch amp for a future sub and to power the 6x9's (2ch for 6x9's, 2 bridged for the sub). im not gonna worry about my front door speakers as ill fade most of my sounds to the back. any help or advice is greatly appreciated!! thanks in advance guys

    Hey Jolly.

In my own humble opinion, if you'll be running a sub then you won't need the 6x9s - the punch-outs in your VP will be for 6" rounds, if you're carfeul you could squeeze 6.5" rounds in there.

They'd be great, seeing as you're running a sub to take care of the bottom end - you don't need the extended bottom end you acheive with 6x9 ovals.

If you're hell-bent of going the 6x9s, you can get spacers which will allow you to fit the ovals into the round hole - DON'T be tempted to just chop the holes bigger, you might end up being slapped with a defect!!

There's one other thing to consider too - if you're fitting speakers to the parcel shelf, then throwing a sub into the boot, it's a VERY good idea to close in the back of your parcel shelf mounted speakers - the pressure inside the boot from your sub will cause the cones in the shelf speakers to be pumped, causing them firstly to go out of linearity (ie - the sound will be badly coloured), and in extreme cases I've even heard of the cones being split by the excessive pressure from the sub!!!! Something to think about maybe......

    Anyhow, just my $0.02

i would make a new parcel shelf out of some MDF about 16-19mm thick, pretty simple really, i got four 6x9's in my parcel shelf in a row and then two 6.5"'s where the factory speakers go, all alpine. but yeah i think its easier to make a new shelf, but thats only my opinion. otherwise yeah you can use spacers, but i dont think they look good as i like the fluch mounted look all the way
    cheers, nick

fair enough, i tried many different designs with my shelf, i mad a complete fibreglass shelf soo al my speakers were on angles gacing front and some were facing centre, but i got bored with it so i jsut made a flat shelf with flush speakers, looks simple, but im not happy with it, will pull it out again and do some more fibreglassing, i also want to intergrate alpine in there as well with prespex or something with a nice neon behind it, but i think i will finish my VB dash first, fully custom made fibreglass dash, with integrated PS2, LCD, DVD player and a few gauges, will be different,
but yeah if you looking for a quick fix go spacers, or get 6" speakers, thats all my opinion, sorry bout the long post

Mate, go the shelf as these fellas have suggested. Seriously, the bit extra effort now will reward you with better sound and appearance. If you're not that handy yourself, bribe one of your mates who is with a carton and a barbie! (only after he's finished it though!)

Potshots - that dash setup sounds pretty trick. Obviously a pretty handy bloke with a bit of glass..... I agree with your point though that spacers look a bit blech - with a MDF panel you also get the advantage of a more rigid baffle for the drivers anyway. You're not wasting amp power/energy in vibrating the panel.

    My $0.02.......

na man, im still learning, it a very long process with a lot of thinking about where everything goes and what shape i want, but it is a project and will take a while.

but yeah if you go spacers, i think you can buy sort of contoured ones that arent just flat, they have more of a nicer shape, but then you will be left with a rattle in the panel, especially with a lot of bass

the only thing i have to do on my shelf is put the side bits on cos i havent got around to doing it
    cheers
