**** awsome tutorial thanks for the effort
Cutting dash boards for a quicker fit?? installers like that were one of the reasons i left expert... i can get everything required for a stereo fit of a vn/vp in under 5 mins... 8 minutes including front speaker pods in a VR/VS whats taking them so long?
**** awsome tutorial thanks for the effort
hey, do any of you guys know if toyota lexcen and vr-vs have the same wiring colours?
Ok Ok, I'm a bit freaked out too by all the unscrewing and pulling/pushing of grey plastic bits... About the CUTTING.
To the experts (and you truley are), can I save some time and fidling by just inserting a saw and cutting the existing mounting screws? off??? and pulling it straight out?
I mean, for you guys the RIGHT way is a snack, but for us time poor, 5 thumbed idiots with nagging wives and kids that steal screws,,,, open to options.
Either way,, this is a great post with loads of details. Much appreciated. :-)

what? why would you want to cut the screws off? surely that would take longer?
This guy in another post said that they just use a saw to 'cut' the screws, but I have looked at a few pics of an open console and it seems it's the 'L' bracket either side.
So a simple slice with a reciprocating saw I figure. >> It's like a hacksaw blade but power operated form one end. You can even get cordless ones now. Zip, zap and done I thought? Slide it out, don't need the brackets, just fit the new sleeve that came with it.
the new sleeve won't work properly...just do it properly or don't do it at all....
You put you left foot in, your put your right foot in , you take your left foot out and you slide it all about!
The old brackets are the only good way to fit a new HU in, the sleeves are crap
Personly i think its fine to cut the old harness. if u went to sell the car, whould anyone want to buy it with an old EuroPox Radio/Cass in it? most ppl these days want at least a CD player prefebly wiff MP3 too!
Just my 2 cents...
I have replace the std Eurovox unit with a sony Cd player and all works fine EXCEPT the engine immobiliser wont turn off. IS the Std radio someway involved with the engine immobiliser/security or is this just a coincidence that it has develeoped a fault just after I changed the head unit. Even the "turn ign on for 40 secs wont clear the immobiliser
Any ideas![]()
I don't understand what you mean by the immobiliser won't switch off. Do you mean you can't starrt your car?
Check to make sure the LED for the immobiliser is plugged in correctly.
You put you left foot in, your put your right foot in , you take your left foot out and you slide it all about!
Yes the problem was the car wouldnt start because the immobiliser wouldnt deactivate. Murphy's Law struck again. Just at the time I decided to start the car after installing the head unit the little lug that sits on the battery inside the key decided to come unsoldered hence the key wasnt working correctly. Resoldered the lugs and all works well. SO the answer to my question is NO the radio doesn't affect the security system but the battery lug in the key becoming unsoldered sure does
Thanks for the reply
I can't see the photos in the guide. Is there any other place I could find this exact guide with the photos or an equally comprehensive guide?
This is how i do them.

The correct way to pin a wiring loom. NEVER cut the factory plugs off.
This allows for replacement of factory deck should the car be sold.
Those pins are designed for use in Commodores and are that frikken tight, the connection is better then the one from the back of the factory radio.
also that pic allows you to see what wire goes where![]()
if I saw one of my techs do that I would instantly dismiss them. Solder is created for a reason.
You put you left foot in, your put your right foot in , you take your left foot out and you slide it all about!
yeah, so factory decks cant be put back in when car is sold.
Splice into it behind the deck....to solder a wire you don't HAVE to actually cut it.![]()

i think it looks much neater pinned, and alot less tacky too
Except that it provides what call a "Fail point" if it's soldered or if a harness is used then it chances of failure are reduced to virtually nil and I'm guessing you haven't seen a soldered and heat shrinked connection to know what neat really is.
You put you left foot in, your put your right foot in , you take your left foot out and you slide it all about!
that pic is anything but neat, u still need to somehow cram that in the small room you have behind the headunit and that way doesnt look to sturdy
Solder = risk of dry joints and high resistance
Pined = EXACTY THE SAME AS FACTORY DECK
the factory deck is a pin connection - not soldered....go figure.
the fools who by the adaptor plugs - they solder onto the wires, but its still a Pin connection there in the plug...
there is also plenty of room back there... if you think there isnt then you dont know what your doing.
