ive crossed over from toyota to commodore, so i have NFI on commodore stereo installation, atm all i can do is the cd player, i want to install my amp, but had a look the other day and couldnt work out how to get the trim panels off to run the power and rcas from the front to the back, and i didnt want to just pull at panels incase they were screwed in. i ahev tried searching but couldnt find anything that helps.
can anyone offer any advice or tips on installing an amp. ive been told run the power to the passenger side and make a hole in the main loom grommet and run the wiring through there. which seem simple enough, but how do i get the sill panels off so i can run the wiring along the with the factory wiring from the rear lights etc. is there screws hidden somewhere?
any help would be appreciated
mate i have just done my VS sedan and its was a bit of work but simple enough.
1. As for the power cable you can run it down the drivers side but i couldn't work out how but there is a hole on the other side which goes through just under the glove box.
2. for running it the length of the car, at the bottom of the door you will see a rubber seal running from front to back all you do is ripped that out and then there is clips which when you push the two sides together clip out - i found these are real hard to get out -
3. once thats done if you look through from the boot you will see a small hole up near the back of the seats with the wires come through well thats were you need to feed the cables through from the other side so all you do is push aside the seat and push the cable though.
its not that hard
to get the RCA's to the head unit its best to do it with the head unit out becasue of the gap that is there and you will find that you might find that the headunit will stick out a bit if you have to bigger RCA's. i feed my rca's one down the drivers side and one down with the powercable(as i have two amps).
any questions let me know and i can send pictures so just send us a email
alright, thats the answer i was looking for.
saw those clips and wasnt sure if i had to take them out or not.
as for rcas, i would have to have the HU out anyway to get the remote wire anyway.
as for RCAs you shoudltn run them along the same side as the power cable can pick up interference.
thanks for your help
yeah i know i shouldn't tun my rca's the same side as my power but it was to much hassle at the time but the rca is for my subs and the other rca is down the other side for my speakersOriginally Posted by WiLo
run the power down the drivers side unless your car is a manual. there is a big arse grommet used for the clutch cable near the brake booster (big black thing on the firewall). pierce that and run the cable through it. remember less cable used is less money spent.
now there is a soft plasic strip that runs the length of the doorsill. goto the side of the back sea and locate the end of the strip. pull it out and remove from the doorsill completely. now push the doorsill together so the new gap closes and the plastic sill will remove with some wiggling.
there is a plastic panel that, if your sitting in your drivers seat your right foot rests on. pull the bottom of the panel to the rear of the car and lift up. run the power cable and the instalation is the reverse of the removal procedure.
easy!
garfa as i said to pugga thanks, i pulled the rubber strip up and didnt want to break anything so i figured id ask before i go doing my usual pull unless it breaks.
and the panel at the front was the same. i know what the brake booster is and i was thinking about going through the grommet you mention
no worries!
ok i installed the amp today so figured i would give my advice/tips on how to do it.
to remove the sill panels is easy once you work it out,
remove the rubber strip and get a grip and slid the inner(closer to cabin) side up, this should remove the clips pretty easy, the ones in the middle of the panel were the hardest i found.
to run the power cable from battery to rear if its an auto there is an oval sort of shaped grommet in place where the clutch stuff goes normally, this was a bit of a bitch to get out in my case, once the grommet is out i poked a screw driver through the carpet so i could see where the hole is in the cabin, with the part under the steering wheel where the fuses are lowered i could see it pretty easily, it was in a circle sort of thing which again im assuming is for the clutch pedal in a manual, if you run the power cable through here be aware that it can touch the steering column if your not carefull, i ran the power along the drivers side obviously and ran it with the factory wiring that goes towards the rear of the car, i fed it through the little plastic retainer type things so it would stay where i want it to, with the back seat removed i ran it where i wanted, once this is done you could put all the trim pieces back in if you are confident that it will be alright, i put it back in at this stage, the sill panel just pushed back into place, had some problems getting the rubber strip back in but this was easily fixed with the help of a screwdriver.
i ran the rcas down the passenger side, again i removed all trim panels before starting, with the panel in the front passenger footwell there is a screw(or two because i had one fallout not sure where it goes) closer to the firewall at the top of the panel. i ran the rcas but didnt put the panels back in until i had them connected to the HU so i could be sure i had enough cable to fit properly.
i will advise people if they are buying rcas get ones that have a right angle on them, if they are straight you might have problems with hitting the heater core. i dont have factory brackets holding the HU so i did a bit of bending which fixed the problem but would highly reccomend right angle rcas.
for the earth i have continued my dodgy dicks backyard mechanics/auto sparky tradition and used the middle fold down bracket part to mount my earth, not the best will be fixed once uni exams are over but today i didnt have the time to make a new earth point.
i did not connect the power cable to the battery until last so i didnt short anything, seeing as i have a remote i had the HU turned off before hand, went to the rear of the car so i was in view of the amp turned the amp on and didnt see anything spark so everything must be sweet, will update later once i buy the sub and hook up the speakers(4ch amp)
hopefully this will help anyone that has not done an install in a VS before.
