g'day all
Im in the process of planning my dvd installation.
i know some of the laws regarding the screen being on while driving, but i wanted someone to clarify something.
I have my MP3's on a DVD and without the screen it would be impossible to find a specific song. The screen displays folders and file names only. no graphics.
but i know i can get defected cause it CAN play DVD's while driving.
so what i was thinking is having a hidden bypass switch connected between the handbrake and the screen. so if i get pulled over i can flick the switch and when the want to check the screen it will turn off when the handbrake is down...
any idea if this would work or not?
the screen and DVD player dont have the handbrake wire like some do.
cheers

Let me know if this helps or if u have any other questions....cheers
Lets work as a TEAM and do it MY WAY!!![]()
its a stand alone screen, which will be moulded into the crash pad.
i was thinking of puting the switch along the RCA video cable, so if i get pulled over i can flick the switch and just tell the cops that i forgot to turn it off. cause if there is no signal it goes to a blue screen
don't be interfering with the signal line. don't touch it. Just leave it as it is.Originally Posted by Snotty
Take the handbrake wire and screw it in to an earth with a switch in between...
You put you left foot in, your put your right foot in , you take your left foot out and you slide it all about!
All i did was take the wire that goes to the handbrake and connect it to earth via a switch so if i do get pinned i can flick the switch and screen wont work
in sa the laws say only screan aloud is for driving navigation aids
other screans may not be seen from outside the vehicle form other drivers and the drive must not be able to see screan while moving
id like to see what hapens to factory fitter headrests that can be seen from outside the car while driving
the only way a screan can be legal is if your a cop
pfft
oh and also ground your handbrake wire then put a switch on it like the other guys say
ok, i see where you're coming from, but from what i've read, it is only defectable if you can watch DVD's whilst driving, but navigation maps are permitted, and music information and menus, as long as it doesn't have moving graphics, are also permitted. if it is illegal to have the screen on whilst driving...
(a) why do the manufacturers make it so that the song list or Settings menu, for example, are able to be accessed while driving if it is defectable?
(b) some regular CD H/U have bright, colourful screens as well, so where is the line drawn? think Alpine iXa100... that has a full colour screen, approx 2 inch x 2 inch, that does not play DVD's, just displays song title, track time etc.
how can they justify allowing single DIN screens, that are just as bright as 2DIN screens? are some non DVD headunits with colour screens defectable because they are too bright?
i am not having a dig, just wanting to clarify, because i am getting a screen in dash soon, and we have just finished installing a screen into my brother's car. any help greatly appreciated. I'm in SA also...
Cheers,CC
EDIT... OMG i just saw the date of this thread... ignore if you wish

The VZ is here! About time!
you would have to be very unlucky to get defected for that
Epic thread dig!
A certain legal nazi should be onto this in no time, since its soooo illegal![]()

Ok well since people still seem to be interested in this I suppose I'll share my experience...
I'm from NSW and sometimes when I go on drives I tend to have my DVD player out and playing a compilation sports clip of some sorts and I've been pulled over a few times, the law here states that DVD players are allowed to be operational for nagivational and driving assist purposes (eg: reverse camera, etc) however things such as entertainment are outlawed. I challenged a past fine of mine in court and won basically on the arguement that there were no moving pictures at the time, what the officer saw was the DVD player displaying the Album Art picture and thus it did not pose any distraction and basically won. Here is the NSW law regarding it:

Just remember too that manufacturers are there to make $. As far as they are concerned you could be putting it into a private vehicle that does not go on the road. The laws vary from state to state and it is up to the owner/driver to ensure that what they are doing complies with state law. If a manufacturer made a head unit, and a function was legal in all but one state - would they stop selling it in that state? People would simply buy it off ebay or somewhere else get around that anyway.
