Mid woofers go in the front doors. Tweeters go in the dash under those vent looking things on top outside edges just inside the windscreen.

Crossovers will fit under the dash somewhere. Stock splits don't use separate xovers.

StoneX supplied this link a long time ago, it's got the detail of the dash. http://members.dodo.com.au/klparker/instrument_full.pdf

At the risk of over simplifying.

Splits are component speakers, two (or three) separate or (split) speakers per channel. This means that each speaker can be optimised to play certain frequencies. Each component (tweeter and mid woofer) is located separately, thus optimising their response further. There will also usually be an extenal cross-over network. This is a box with circuits inside that send the appropriate frequencies to the appropriate speaker. High frequencies to the tweeters and low frequencies to the mid woofer.

In the vt and later, the factory system can have splits already. Although they don't have a proper cross over as such.

Here are some pics. The tweeters aren't installed in this one but that is where they go.

    I hope that helps.

Yeah, as shown in the pics. The woofer is behind the grille in the door, which is pretty obvious, and the tweeter is under the vent on the top of the dash in the far forward corners.
