I've got a '98 VT Commodore, and I want to put some parcel shelf speakers in. I've got the geniune head unit, without CD player, and I was wondering if it is possible to do. Any help would be appreciated.
Pauly.
Without buying an amp, you can only disconnect the rear door speakers and extend the wires to the parcel shelf. But this is pointless because door speakers will sound better than parcel shelf mounted speakers as they're in front of the passengers.
If you want better sound, upgrade your front speakers... Afterall, that is where you sit.
Thanks for the help. What speakers do you recommend for putting in the front doors? Would it be better to upgrade all four speakers? (2 front doors, 2 rear doors)
Pauly.
I can't recommend any speakers... You need to work out how much you want to spend, then go to the store with a CD and listen to speakers in your price range.
Front doors take 6" without any mods unless they have a big magnet. 6.5" need minor modifications to the plastic spacer to fit, but it's worth doing as most GOOD speakers come in 6.5", rather than 6".
Since you aren't getting an amp or anything, i'd upgrade all 4 speakers. I don't know if all VT's have splits(components speakers - separate woofer and tweeter), but if your's does then you'll need splits for the front and just coaxial speakers for the rear.
But if you plan to upgrade to have amps in the future, i'd forget speakers for now and get an aftermarket head unit. It will make your stock speakers sound better anyway, then upgrade speakers when cash allows.
This link has a pretty comprehensive list of brands that are good and bad.
you might want to remember that the stock VY h/u will not drive the aftermarket speakers very well, there will be minimal mid-range but the sound will be much clearer. the stock speakers will give a much more rounded sound. really it you like your highs then it will be ok but other wise i think it will seem more a down grade than up grade!
