hey guys,
just wondering if this is feasible and easy at all?
i'm just about to get a JVC KW-AVX700 installed into a VX
it's a double din CD /DVD player with a 6.5" LCD Monitor, and unfortunately it's not detachable
now i've got fairly dark tints on my windows (28% on the sides, 20% @ the back) but i wanted to reduce the risk even more of someone trying to break in and rip out the screen by putting the face plate of the stock stereo over the top of the LCD screen, which would be totally removable and for cosmetic reasons only
i've seen this done once before but i'll be buggered if i can remember where!
just wondering if it's relatively easy to achieve and how it can be done! i've never actually handled the stock head unit when it's been taken out of the car...
thanks guys
is there a way u can fit it in the box under the headunit?...
Need some parts for my VH 253:
Green standard steering wheel...Green lower B-pillar covers.
Green sunglasses holder/lower dash bits...Air-con and assorted engine bay parts.
PM with any info.

that sounds like a great idea mate, a real stealth install. Is there any gaps or holes next to the LCD screen that could be used to hold te stock face on?
I was going to buy the exact same DVD model on ebay, but havn't yet due to budget. By putting the pop out screen below the h/u, would mean you have no way to use the controls on the h/u as the screen would come up over it. Only option is to put it above the h/u as a double din. Unless you purchase a seperate screen which is removable.
B-T-GiZzLe if you do get an old stock h/u unit and chop off the face it would be a great cover up, however removing it or putting it back on everytime you get in your car will become annoying, then again better then havin it stolen. Good Luck anyway and post a pic if you can when its done, as I'm looking at buying the same model.....
i guess you would have to sit the HU into the dash a little bit, then you could remove the plastic face of the stock HU and use it to fill the recess you just created.
nah i only want to false head unit to sit in there whenever i'm not in the car, as a security thing, not when i'm drivin around!Originally Posted by ruso
can i suggest you buy the head unit at a retailer? i searched long and hard for it on ebay and the best price i could find (from someone that sounded reputable!) for an Australian coded model (remember with DVD's & T.V, our television system is different to U.S & Japan) was about $1000 from HK including shipping, and i bought my head unit from JB for $1100, and this way it was a completely risk free transaction, with a guaranteed warranty etc, for an extra $100! it's a no brainer if you ask me!
also i managed to pick up a digital set top box including antenna, power supply, remote control etc designed for cars for $150 on ebay, can't wait to get that up and running!
anyway i'll definetly investigate the false head unit thing further, and post pics when it's all done
oh and also, for those out there that have actually handled the stock VT/VX head unit when it's been out of the car, is it relatively simple to get the face plate off of it?
sink the aftermarket h/u in a bit.
then once you have removed the plastic face of the stock one, and glued all the buttons on, the have a thin sheet of metal on the top of the fake face. so the profile looks like this:

then just have a little gap between the dash and the h/u where you can slot the metal into.
easy.
sounds good cheers mate!
oh god. BTGIZZLE your gonna kill me...but I have done several install installs like that when the VTs first came out. But I donot have any pictures.
I countersunk the new HU about 3/4" and then on the sides of the hole in the dash was velcro. On the back edge of the radio face plate was more velcro and it just used to push in and pull out....just don't put it in upside down...looks a little sus.
You put you left foot in, your put your right foot in , you take your left foot out and you slide it all about!
could always make like a roller door to slide down over it..
no worries. (reputation, hint hint!Originally Posted by B-T-GiZzLe

B-T-GiZzLe how'd you go connecting the wires from the headunit to the socket on your vx. DO I need to cut the wires off the socket from the old headunit and join the new ones to them or do I need to buy some type of joiner/socket..............
Any advice on how to install it would be good.
