    Default damages crossover

today i installed my splits into the front of the car and they go really well.... my friend however decided to "crank it up" at the amp controls turning up the gain a whole lot and the crossover to the left speaker made a loud cracking noise then a whole lot of smoke. i jumped in the car and turned it off then checked the crossover... besides all the smoke there was no burn mark it didnt feel overly hot and the speaker still worked after i turned it back on... what the hell happened? im driving the speakers by a 4 channel cadence z4000 i think and the speakers are VDO daytons... watts match up for the setup

    signed, extremely confused

Default sounds like capacitors to me

sounds like u blew up some capacitors... u may be able to take this to an electronics specialist and get them replaced as long as the rest of the circutry is ok. otherwise i guess u r up for some new crossover boxes.
P.S i think it is capactiors coz i remeber blowing some up in yr 11 physics from running too much current thru em.

why would the speaker still work then? with no burn marks it just plain confusing. i didnt know crossovers had capacitors in them... i know capacitors can be used as a crossover but

Crossovers are made from capacitors to filter out low frequencies, inductors to filter out high frequencies and some resistors. The cap/s are the most likely thing to smoke. If the cap blew completely, your woofer would still be going, the tweeter wouldn't. If it only blew partially, it might still work a bit. So if it sounds fine and your tweeter is still working, i'd leave it as it is... Otherwise ask your mate to buy a new crossover.

Friends don't let friends touch car stereos...it destroys stereos and friendships
You put you left foot in, your put your right foot in , you take your left foot out and you slide it all about!
