Default soldering iron and wire stripper.

    'ey guys,
just thought that if you a budding elec/automotive buff and need a good cordless iron that the portasol super pro is a very nice iron to work with. enough power to solder almost all gauges. the temp is adjustiable and it runs for a bit over an hour depending on how high its turned up.
also the jaycar auto wire stripper is a bit more sturdy than the bunnings equiv. one.
just thought you all might like to hear about them.
    cheers, garth.

(note: i am in no way being payed for this plug by any company.)

The purchase of side cutters that cut flat are the best investment around
You put you left foot in, your put your right foot in , you take your left foot out and you slide it all about!

I got a set of strippers, you just line up the wire in the correct hole and the strippers grab the wire and strip it all in one action. They the best investment i ever made, cost around $25 from Dick Smith or Jaycar.

bah, I dunno why you kids don't just use side cutters to strip wire... why carry around an extra tool.

normally i will just use a knife, but it is quicker for most people to use a dedicated stripper, less chance of the masses cutting the wires!
surely you have had aprentices that can't strip wire?!

Because if your working with a 5 core wire (as I do fitting towbars) a pair like these give you the capacity to strip 3/4/5 wires at once.

    Thanks Garfa,

I've just installed my new HU this weekend, so I went and bought a Portasol first. I love It! I wish I'd bought one years ago...

To anyone who is still using a corded soldering iron I can't sress enough how convenient and easy a cordless iron is to use. It is more than hot enough for any use, and the hot air tip is great for heatshrink tubing...

I still use sidecutters to strip wire though as I was taught by a sparky. It does take some practice and skill to avoid cutting the wire. However I will be buying the auto wire stripper this week as I am sure it will save me heaps of time...

    Regards,
    Sorak.

I'd lay money down that using my sidecutters (another term for wirecutters) I could strip back the outer core and then 5 inner cores quicker then you could line them up in that thing...

I've got wire strippers, but more often than not, I'll just go back to using the trusty Stanley knife for some reason...

And I'm still using the old school corded soldering iron. May have to invest in a cordless one for my next project.

One thing that I still always struggle with - if you're by yourself, how do you hold the soldering iron in one hand plus the solder in the other hand plus both ends of what you're trying to solder together? I always manage in the end but there's a lot of cursing along the way!
