i'm not running any subs but just a shitty amp i got of a mate to help the system and ive had the same system for bout 6 months with no trouble and i was thinkin it might be the alternator cos that's what it seems like, like the stereo isn't gettin enough power

ok one shitty 4 channel will not be a problem for the alternator. i am running a 130wrmsx4 channel amp and a monoblock down to 1 ohm that produces in excess of 800Wrms, so pretty much unless you alternator is FAAAARKEDDD then it will not be it (use a DMM to test for 14.4Volts at the battery terminals when the car is on).
what guage power wire are you running?
also maybe its the shitty amp's protectiuon mode shutting in coz you are running it too hard.
so this is what you should do:
    what guage power wire?
    tune your gains roperly
and then come back if the problem persists...

Make sure you test that alternator, I use to have a vq (hence the name). And it was cutting out on me at high volumes....I checked the alternator and it was reading around 13 volts with nothing on, then turned the lights on and it dropped to 12.5, next turned the heater on and it went down from there....until I got to a voltage of just below 12 volts with everything on.....except the stereo.....

Let us know how you go.....cheers
