The headunit is always going to put out the same power! by putting 260W speakers doesnt mean that they have 260W going through them. Dont even bother posting MAX figures as they mean nothing, what does the WRMS (nominal power) read?? it will be something like 50WRMS.
Plus the H/U only puts out ~20WRMS so you see what im getting at.
By adding aftermarket speakers you will only get better sound quality nothing more. A pair of good splits for the front couldnt hurt but I recommend getting a good aftermarket H/U and Amp to power them if you want it sounding really good. (Phreddy on this forum does conversions on stock H/U to allow an amplifier connections if you dont want to loose the stock H/U which work quite well)

HU is a fair bit less than 20W RMS id be willing to gamble. Theres really not much point in putting speakers with a high power handling with just a stock deck, they wont be any louder, actually quieter, as the sesitivity would no doubt be reduced

Agreed Semi, although a slight desrease in SPL might be tolerable if the actual quality is increased.

Still, I always consider power out of the internal H/U amps to be just way too low given the dynamic range a CD is capable of, you really need some decent power level just to provide adequate headroom.

Oh, as a side note I looked pretty closely at the datasheets for the internal power amplifier chips - They're capable of 18WRMS into 4 ohms, but only with a 14.5V supply rail. Voltage drops through the electrical system eventually allow about 13.2V to these chips with engine running, so they won't even manage that 18W figure in the real world.

Hmmm - James, we've sorta deviated from your original post too, haven't we??

Here's an idea to try - the pioneer 6.5" splits (TSC-160 or something) sound bloody lovely up front, plus they fit in the door pods without too much modification. (you just need to cut away some of the flared rear part of the moulding to clear the magnet structure) Apart from that though they drop[ straight in. They come with a nicely made crossover too.

Fit a pair of those (or similar) to the front, and see how it goes - if you discover then that you need more power, then investigate your amp-ing options. I guarantee you'll be pleasantly surprised with just the speaker upgrade tho - the Korean paper cone horrors they come out of the factory with are WAY below par IMO.
