Just wondering how people have installed an external amp with standard H/U.
Where have you installed the amp?
How to you get speaker cables from the amp into the boot?
You will need a line output converter(LOC) with RCA outs, which is a little box that transforms the stock HU's low level outputs to a higher level signal with RCA out. Then you run the RCA cables from the converter to the amp.
Usually you mount the amp in the boot, luckily the VY has nice boot lining to hide all the messy cables.
The amp will have speaker outputs that you simply run the wiring to your speakers.
Just be sure you connect the correct wires to the LOC, there is a thread with the correct colours. Also know that if you are replacing the back speakers you will lose the rear door pod speakers.
Thanks filthgrinder.
Thats all fine. I am not sure how I get the cables from behind the H/U to the amp in the boot. I will need to get power + L+R audio. How do you get these cables to the boot? Under the carpet / trims?
Anyone recomend the path between the H/U and boot? the drivers side / passengers side?
Thanks.
Um to install the LOC you will have to pull out the centre console and play around in thereDo a search for a HU install thread for VYs on this site, I have only done VNs so im not sure how you will have to remove the stock HU to hook her up, but I ran speaker wire through a VY yesterday.
Power runs from your battery's positive under the hood all the way to the boot. You will need an amp install kit for this, it will come with necessary wiring, fuses, RCA leads etc. You will need to run your power cable through the firewall on the drivers side, along the trims that run all the way up the sides of your car (these all undo with screws, tho the covers need to be pryed up) , then behind the back seat there is a hole you run through. FINALLY we are in the boot!! Then just hide it under the carpet to where you will have yout amp.
Do the exact same thing with the RCA's, running from the LOC, to the PASSENGER side this time (Prevents electrical noise from power cable).
What speakers are you installing, front or back? Either way, you find the correct cables behind the HU, cut them and plug them into the LOC. Your left and right channels are now coming through the RCAs. So you simply run a long RCA cable to the boot as I explained above and plug em into the amp. Then run the wires from your new speakers (or the ones your amplifying) to the amp through the trims down the side of the car and the hole behind your back seat.
PHEW! I hope that makes sense, let me know if you need anything cleared up lol.
mate i wouldnt go for a line convertor find a thread from phreddy and read up on it, he gives you mp3 input and 4 channel low level output, much better quality compared to the convertor, i as many other happy customers wouldnt go any other way.
Thanks for the details filthgrinder that is great it all makes sense.
I will have a play. I will be disconnect the rear speakers on the doors and install 6 x 9" on the parcel shelf.
Thanks Again.
Barbs I would agree, however I have been trying to get in touch with phreddy but I havn't heard back from him :-(
yea rorz hang in there, if ya dropped him a pm when hes got time to get on next he will message ya, hes pretty busy best of times but yeah its well worth the wait!i have nothin but praise the 2 mods really are a gem!
I'm with barbs too. A line converter is a dodgy way of doing it. Phreddy's mod will pick up the signal inside the H/U before the pre-amp and give you 4 x RCA outputs. I'd reccommend it to any VY owner - mine sounds excellent.
As for where to mount the amp - I've put mine under the seat and it works well. That way you don't have to run any wires into the boot.
Just be patient with Phreddy - he's a busy man. I'd send him a reminder PM...
Im also interested in knowing this new solution, please post it up if you get a reply. I am needing to do this to a VY in the near future so keep us posted! Thanks

Here's a link to Phreddy's thread that has all the info you need:
Blaupunkt low-level outputs? You betcha! :D

Guys - I'm back! Thanks for the great plugs from all you fellas too - Dave, Bryan, Barbs, and all the others, thanks to such positive responses my decision to go it alone has been made a whole lot easier.
I seem to do a lot of apologising, and I must again to the guys I haven't gotten back to yet. The last few weeks have been spent organising accountants, suppliers, domain registraion and hosting, MAJOR clean up around here, and at last getting hold of some assembly stock. The good news is that we're going full swing now, and I'll get to all of you in due course. Rorz - I'll be in touch real soon Mate.
The web site still looks pretty crappy, but then HTML ain't exactly where my strengths are.www.asr-audio.com.au is where you'll find it, just don't fall off your chairs laughing.
There's not a whole lot of info on the stereo mods yet, but I'm planning on getting some more pix and stuff over the weekend - although Bathurst might create a small confict there....
