Default You won't believe what I just did! LMAO!

So, I went into my local Wal-Mart (Big W) about an hour ago. Checking to see what stuff they had on clearance. As per usual I didn't even check to look at the Sony gear. I've been shopping for an el cheapo HU to repllace the LG as it's a little bit tired these days.

These two kids were standing by the Sony stuff and I could overhear them saying "Man, I wish had the money I would get this in a heartbeat!" or something similar. After they left I went over to see what they were looking at. Some twit had accidentally mispriced the Sony HUs. One of them retailed for $499 and was marked down to $350. Nice buy I thought nothing to gt excited about though....then I spotted. One of the $499 had the wrong tab on it. It had a tag for a $99 reduced to $45. So, what else could I do?! I snapped it straight up and paid for it! I figured "Shit! If I don't like it then I can rip it out and sell it to som schmedley for $150 and still come out on top!"

So, thats how I came to have this headunit in my possession

    Sony CDXGT550

yup, figured if I'm only paying a 10th of it's price and it's only worth half the price it retailed at then I did a good thing ...still can't believe I brought a Sony.

not quite D. it came up as $350 and the poor guy behind the register looked at it, then at the sticker saying $45 and then he corected it

Just not sure if I can be bothered installing it tonight.

maybe get your $100 worth by blowing it up from a mains power, hitting it with a hammer a few times and lash it to your towball and drag about 5 miles.

then try to get a refund! lol

Ok, well surprisingly enough it is actually quite a little performer. Just curious on how it is for reliability....will find out soon enough I guess.

Although, I do have one question regarding the unit...How in the **** do I use this thing?!

You have to put the red wire to a 12V accesories wire in the car- thats one that comes on when you turn the key. Put the earth (the black one) to a spot in the car thats bare metal and has little resistance to the battery. The 12V constant shoudl be in your loom, should hook that up to the yellow wire. Then find out which is each speaker, and hook up speaker wires to that

To use it, you have to press the 'eject' button to open the CD slot, then put a CD in (preferably Celine Dion or perhaps Bette Midler) and it should start playing

Not all Sony Head units are bad just the cheeper lower lange ones, if you get one of the more expencive higher up models they can be very good.

I have had my Sony head unit compared to several top of the range Pioneer units and have come out top for sound quality and that is even running though 4x 4way Sony Xplod 6.5 inch speakers in the doors and running a 400watt 12 inch Lightning bolt Sub off an alpine 200watt amp.

I think its the other way around, my entry level xplod head unit is quite comparable to others of its price range (i haven't had any reliability issues) but if you get a high end sony head unit they can be quite good but you could do much better for the price.

I was lucky when purchasing mine, it was on sale down from $1500NZ to $350NZ band new with a 3 year warranty.

If you shop arround you can get very good prices for goods.

to be honest, I do believe it is a reliability issue. The entry level players typical run for forever and a day...theres less to go wrong with them. the S-Chassis I used to see those quite a bit with issues.

I think i know your problem dude. I'm a victim of Sony headunit syndrome and i asked myself the same question when i chucked mine in. Try hitting the DSO button a few times until it's off. If i remember correctly, when i read the manual it's there to compensate for crap speakers with no tweeters or very weak tweeters, only problem is by default it's on. So everytime i disconnect/reconnect the battery it turns the crap back on and kills my ears.

Yeah, the problem with sony isnt *strictly with their quality or reliability (which for the price can be easily surpassed anywhere) but is usually with their piss poor design.
If you see someone bashing their head against the steering wheel trying to do the most simple function, then you can almost guarantee its a sony.
The features are usually lacking and not exactly user friendly.
Their DVD decks are pitiful and their amplifiers have a tendancy to fail (from my experience)
But for $45 bucks cant complain.
I've gone through sony, pioneer, eclipse, alpine and JVC decks and I have to say im most happy with the JVC.
The sound quality is great, the features are WAY up there for the pricerange and the stylings is great.
Their amps and subs leave some to be desired though.
On the subject... whos heard of rockford fosgate lately? haha they disappeared into the sunset as quickly as they burst out.
    Times they are a changin.
