    Default RMS Sub/Amp question

Being a bit of an audio newbie I thought I'd come here first to make sure I understand what I've read. Basically theres a 900w sub, with 300w RMS that I'm looking at getting from a friend, but from what I've read this would mean I would need an amp that can put out AT LEAST 300w RMS, as it could damage the sub if its underpowered. If thats the case, am I looking at an expensive amp for that sort of RMS reading?

Not quite...Find an amp that is as close as possible to 300RMSx1 at the correct number of OHM's.

Too much power will obviously damage the sub, and underpowering it may cause problems too. As a rough rule of thumb, 10% either way of the rating is good.

If its a cheap sub though (brands like boss etc.) I wouldnt be putting any more power into it than what its rated at...

Underpowering subs is talked up but its bullshit - you'll never blow a sub with low, CLEAN, power!. What happens is people try to get more out of their amp then it can cleanly produce: result is clipped signal, which is what f**ks your gears.

Get your gains right and you'll never have to worry about "underpowering" a speaker or overpowering a speaker - unless you hook up say a Z1 or eaudio to your mid woofers Some guys over at CAA run 700 into 150RMS woofers...

Without a budget and voice coil configuration no one can give advice about amp selection and cost, but i'll hazard a guess the sub is 4ohm SVC? buy a jaycar 2x150 for under $300 and you'll have 500wRMS on tap. Headroom is your friend

Joey is right.... though 10% of the RMS is the minimum.... if you buy a cheap amp or over power it like JOEY SAID --- amp then you are going to run into troubles if it clips or overheats as most of them do that is where people run into trouble... hence more is better in the RMS department... much harder to blow a sub with too much power than not enough.... like joey said

No a big fan of the JAYCAR amps as they are built to a price... not quality though are a very good amp for the price...

The fusion is 2 ohm SVC? (Re = 1.75) Interesting...
If so, you wont be able to bridge to give it its power (unless you find an amp in your price bracket stable at 2 ohms bridged) Which means your looking at a small monoblock - CAFO any recs? p325.1?. For the pioneer, you can get a two channel and bridge.

everyone these days is out to get it for cheap - which is why the jaycars seem to be the flavour of the month. a Rockford p250.2 will be close to 300wRMS bridged and im sure CAFO could hook you up or even a p300.2 or something completely different: budget?

edit: DDc1a - $340 looks the shizz if you go with the pioneer. 300w at 4 ohms when bridged. When the distributer can get a shipment in....

ALL of the RF Range is 4, 2 and 1 ohm stable ... all can be bridged and the 4 channels can triway!

Why not go the EFX HD5001 that we have on sale it is 2 ohm stable and a much better amp than any jaycar cr@p ... see how many responses that gets... dont get me wrong they are good for the price but that is it..

Joey.... because "MONDAY'S EXPERTS" on forums like CAA swear by them.... and for the price there are better options.... plus PEOPLE get BRAINWASHED BY RMS RMS RMS --- or should that be what ALPINE PUT ON THE BOX.... Still gets me how they have not be HAD FOR THE 350WATTS on the side of the box of the SPR-17LS when they are only 70 RMS and in my book that is a MAX of 140 WATTS!!!

Joey as for the RF Amps the P325.2 is the best deal out of them in that range at the moment..... as they are cheapper than the P3002 and P250.2

    DDC1A
PIONEER have them in stock ... well we got them.......from them! though again the RF is a much better AMP and infact better speakers and subs as well

    Though again BRAINWASHED !!!! MUST HAVE PIONEER !!! ALL THE SYSTEM HAS T O B E P I O N E E R !!!!

Dont get me wrong Pioneer is good stuff and alot better than ALPINE though not a good as JVC for the HU'S

But that is about to change with the new PIONEER models especially the AVIC range that we will have in FEB/ MARCH!!

    PS JOEY thanks

Alpine was the pick of the bunch up until the last 90's when they decided to go to CHINA and there build quality is Garbage now...

If you pay US$0.33 to have a CDA head unit built then you have to ask yourself.....mmmm.... quality

We were Alpine Dealers for over 18 years ... and personally would not use anything else when it come to HU's

Now would not touch them with a BIG STICK!!!

The older gear is still the best in ALPINE and worth fixing...

Well I went out and got a Pioneer system yesterday, 800w 12" TS-W301R with box and a GM-3200T. Installed it today, all went very well, and I'm very happy with the result. I wasn't after "crazy" bass, but I wanted it to be noticeable, which it is. Just temporarily velcro'd to my boot carpet until I can figure out the best way to mount the amp, the sub is going to be bracketed to the underside of the parcel shelf.
