Default Trouble with 6x9s in VP Calais (already searched)

    Hey guys

I have just obught a set of 6x9's for the back of the car, and have now found they are a whole lot harder to install than the 6" i had in there before. I have bought Pioneer TS-A6971E 350w 6x9's and so far have had nothing but trouble.

As per guides i've found via searching, i removed the parcel shelf (MDF) and had a look at the steel. The hole for the 6" speaker is obviously only big enough for that speaker. It was suggested on the forum that i break off the spot welded bracket to give them more room. However there is no bracket (see first picture)

Having decided i can just sit them in there, not flush i went out and bought some spacers from Strathfield. However these do not fit over the hole and between the window, so i can't use these either.

Now i have decided to just forget any chance of them looking good, and just sit them in the hole, and screw them into the parcel shelf, leaving a small gap (view pic 2)

However when testing the units to see that they actually work, i've found that they are performing terribly. No bass at all, and the sound quality is poor, very crackly. Even on a house music song (lots of bass) i am getting more bass out of the 4" in the dash. Even when i have the sound faded half way to the back, the 4" are louder.

The 4" in the front are Kickers, i forget the Wattage. But the old 6" in the back were Kenwood 200W and they were more powerful than the 4"ers and were performing a shitload better than these new speakers. So what is the deal with these speakers? I know they should perform better once they are screwed in properly, but this is ridiculous, there is bugger all sound at all coming out of them.

You guys are my last hope, before i have to pay one of the guys down at JB or Strathfield to do it for me. Even then, i'm not guaranteed i will get the bass and sound i am after. (I know that for really good bass i need an amp / sub, but i park at a station and they would be stolen pretty quickly)

Can someone please help here, i'm all out of ideas. Thanks guys.

I think its coz these speakers ur not using the (coz they have a gap) boot as a sub box u could call it so the sound sounds shit (could b wrong) but these speakers in my view r better with a sub neways. another way u can do it is mount them under neith inside the boot then they will mount flush but if u do that u need 2 make up a box around and under each speaker 4 a lil better bass with no sub.

but from the looks of it if u turn ur speaker the other way (long ways) im sure ud b able 2 make up ur own MDF spacer 2 sit them, u only need 2 lift it up from the parcel shelf frame bout 30-40mm As most of the premade 6x9s r a lil larger in height but its the width of them u have more trouble with then wat u want them 2 b in most cars, only thing is its more time consuming so u need patience 2 do it lol

This is why we made up special adaptors for the 6" to 6x9" with a upto 35 degree angle on them

I think i know the ones you are talking about. When i was at strathfield they had some other spacers that were on an angle. Now that i think about it, in theory they could fit if they were on an angle, tilted towards the front of the car.

I'm thinking that i wasn't getting good sound quality and bass before because they weren't mounted properly, however i didn't think that the reduction would be that dramatic. Do you think that if i put them in the back with angled spacers then they perform as per normal? I just don't want to go and buy $60 spacers and not have them work either

My other thought is that i have completely f*cked up and bought inferior speakers to the ones i already had in there. I assumed that 350w 6x9 speakers would shit on my current 200w 6"ers for both quality and bass. Was i wrong? My plan was to fit the 6x9s in the parcel shelf and get some door pods for the 6"ers in the front doors

    Good bass and clear sound.
thanks mate, thats what i was hoping someone would say! I think i'll have a look tomorrow at getting the angled spacers, and taking back the cheap vertical spacers that i bought (i'm on a budget!)

If for some reason this doesn't work (wouldn't suprise me, its just not been my day today) has anyone got any other suggestions?

Thanks again guys, i appreciate it

why not just cut the pacle shelf and make a bigger hole?
also when you are wiring the speakers make sure the Headunits + is to the speakers + or they will be out of phase and the bass will sound distorted. By what your saying it sounds like thats the problem.

Definetly check the polarity of your wiring but good god with the way they are setup you are not going to get a good sound.

The angled spacers will definetly get you a better sound. Cutting the parcel shelf to fit the speakers in will give you the BEST sound without a doubt. Bear in mind that this changes the structural integrity of the vehicle a little bit and makes the car unroadworthy.
You put you left foot in, your put your right foot in , you take your left foot out and you slide it all about!

exactly why cutting the parcel shelf is not an option at all. looks like i'll be going with the angled spacers. I'm just hoping that these will fit, nothing else has so far!

    Thanks again guys

take the car and speakers to the store you're gonna buy the spacers from, and if theyre any decent shop, they will let you go out and trial fit them in the car.

i do it for customers all the time. saves paperwork if they dont fit and gotta be returned, and saves you an unnecessary trip.
