    Default VT Changing Speaker System

    Hello,

Im not much of a car person.. so you will have to be easy on me

I've just bought a 98 Holden Commodore VT With S pack.

Now.. its still got stock speakers/headunit, which im wanting to replace, and i've also noticed on the back of the chairs theres a place for 2 6x9s but it looks like i'll have to cut out the holes?

This then leaves me with the problem of my headunit, a pioneer ( just ordered ) only has 4 x 50W output, yet there will be 6 speakers. Will i need an amp to run them? + im going to get a sub eventually anyway.

I've tried to pull out the cover on the door speakers atm, and i just cant get them out no matter how hard i pull on the groove underneath. Is there a special trick to this?

I want to do the speaker wiring myself, and get the headunit installed professionally, think i was quoted $80 for the headunit installation. and about $200 for 4 speakers....

    So my questions are.
    1. What would my best bet to be with the 6x9's
2.How do i get the guard off for the door speakers
    3. Is it worth paying to get the powercable/sub/amp installed professionally?
    4. Are there any visual guides to doing this myself?

I've searched around the forums and i cant find anything for what im after. I'd install the headunit myself if i had any clue how.

    Thanks

    AwaKen

There is alot of info on installing and removing the head unit

You just need to check in this forum alone.

    1. dont get 6x9s. a speaker with an oval shaped cone will distort the sound more. not a good thung. also you will be just wasting money, 6 speakers are not needed.
    2. what part exactly? the door skin?
    3. if you can solder(or use crimp connectors) and are technically minded installing an amp.hu.speakers is a piece of cake!
    4. not an exact visual guide. you will need to remove some parts of the dash (use a heynes/gregorys manual for this if you have not had much experience with car interiors). then bend the metal bracket for the new h/u to fit. solder/crimp connections of h/u OR you can get an adaptor harnes which changes the factory plug to the pioneer style plug ($25ish). then because the new h/u takes up less room than the stocker you need to bolt a pocket in the blank space.
or if that sounds too much like hard work you can get a kit for a vt which will include the harness, pocket and everything else inc. instructions on how to install it.
or you can give a bloke $80 for less than a 1/2 hours work! (it will take you round 2-3 hours if you are new to this sorta stuff.)
speakers are dead easy to install. there maybe some cutting on the speaker holder known as pod to enlarge it but that will be about it. or pay some bloke $200 to installl 4 speakers for 1-1.5 hours work.

its your money but..... its sort of like paying for a mechanic to do your oil changes, costs a heap for an easy job. (stereos are better, no oily hands!!!!!)

Can i ask y r u bending the metal bracket and bolting the single din pocket wen u dont need 2 ina VT? everything slides in and clips into place no bolting down or bending required

I put some 69s in my vt simply cause i had them laying around everyone will tell you not to put 69s and get a sub.
In the boot where you can see the outline of where the 69s would go it is just tack welded a good bash in the centre of them will pop em out making room to install the 69s I just ran the rear speaker wires to the parcel shelf as there was know wires back there.
Oh i know what you mean obout cutting the holes now you mean in the parcel shelf velt you just need to cut round this very carfully and buy some mesh inserts dont get the inserts from holden cause they are something stupid like $100 i got my no name ones from auto barn i think for $20-$30.
If you not real confident id get the stereo dude to install the h/u as this is much tricker then the speakers.

wat i did for my parcel shelf is cut the holes out then get it recarpeted look so much betta! but if your going 2 get a sub dont bother i would just get 6inch splits for the front and 4inch for the back doors ran them from a 4chennel amp and run your sum from a single amp

U'd b better off puttin 6" ot 6.5" back in there rather than puttin 4" in u will need 2 make new door pods if u do as they will b smaller u wont have nething 2 screw them down with

i rekon it sounds better havin speakers in the parcel shelf only thing i hated wen i did mine was that where the 6x9s sit they r off set from the parcel shelf itself and looks shit house n covers 1/4 of the speaker but if u do get the 6x9 grill u wont notice it as much but it may effect the sounds just a tad i ended up making some MDF mounts and bought them up and across a bit so they sat evenly in the 6x9 holes u cut out

wrx884: to install the metal sleeve (which a lot of people like, dunno why?!) you need to bend the metal in the vt a bit.

oh k well every VT n VX ive dun i havent had 2 bend nething the clips in them push outwards wen u slide in the deck itself and that locks it into place i would imagine that would b the same case here specially being a pioneer deck

    Default Thanks

Ok great, thanks for all the help.

What i might do is get the h/u installed professionally, and get them to show me how to remove it again, so i can hook all the speaker wire up.

What sort of AMP does one recommend for the speakers then? And where in the car would i hide it?

I was thinking mabey to start off with just get 4 speakers and hook them straight to the h/u and just get an amp + sub too.

I dont need anything too fancy, just seems like its gonna cost about $1000 all up ( installed ) i'd like to bring that cost down as much as i can.. and do what i can on my own ( which will prob be not much )

Yeah, but im not a "car" person :P and i dont really want to mess things up and end up costing me more. I've seen the tuts for removing the h/u thats in atm.. and i dont see anything about taking out the dash, just that i should get some coathangers and bend them, and insert each one into the 4 little holes then it should just pull out.. :/

But even if i got it out.. would it be just a straight swapover? Im sure someone at WOW sight and sound said i'd need a little box thing (quoted me $15) to put underneath so the new h/u doesnt fall down

yer thats a single din pocket hes talkin bout hes right there and yes its pretty much a straight forward swap only thing u need 2 do is make sure u wired the right wires from the HU harness 2 the cars elec system eg. ACC, battery, ground ect then u just follow the chart u get with ur head unit 2 match up the front and rear lefts and right speakers but in ur case it will prolly b better 2 get 1 of those addapters that plugs into ur old harness and into ur new 1 and that plugs into ur HU no cuttin or soldering required then im pretty sure? then its just a matter of wiring up the speakers using the colour code.

2 find out how 2 pull appart ur dash look in the VT/VX threads they r all over the place in there i'll try find some 4 ya but u'll prolly beat me 2 it lol

OK great thanks think i'll just pay for the H/U to be installed, at least that way its getting professionally done. I'll see if they will let me watch them do it so i can learn for another time

i've found some cheap fusion splits for the front, just wondering what you guys think

    http://www.ryda.com.au/Fusion-EN-CM6...s-p/encm65.htm

I've always thought fusion was a good brand (saw a demo of them at crusty demons ;p) cant find if its a 2way/3way etc (not that i know what it means, just been told to get 3way)

    or something like this
    http://www.ryda.com.au/Clarion-SRS17...-p/srs1726.htm

i've only got about $600 to spend (including instalation) as thats already took me entire sound system up to over a grand

    and for back:

    http://www.ryda.com.au/Fusion-EN-FR6...-p/enfr653.htm

nice and cheap, there 3 way ;D

i'd work on a sub/amp later... still dont know where i'd put the amp? heh

    http://www.ryda.com.au/category-s/81.htm

thats where im looking at, the prices seem pretty cheap there.

If someone could pull amp/sub/speakers from that site to recommend... trying to get cheap but ok quality that'd be great. I've got no clue, theres 300W amp.. which im guessing would be OK for a sub for $150 ( Fusion )

not sure on the plug as ive never used 1 b4 but only other thing i can think of is that u would need a 2 channel amp wiring kit the aeropro do some kits that will suit ur system roughly bout $90 i think thats just so u can run power 2 ur amp and sub. seems like ur pretty much set then

I have a Kenwood Headunit in my VT, it seems ok. Dont really know much about it. Jut wondering Instead of spending lots of cash on Subs and Amps, could i just replace all the current speakers with better quality ones, and the 6x9's at the back for some Bass?

Would that work or am i loosing it....

You can install as much speakers as you want, but dont expect much bass without a amp.

they shouldnt have in a VT but 4 some stupid reason ppl do but if its not u just gotta take the pocket out and pull down on the back of the unit try not 2 move the front if u can as it usually shows the metal frame in between the gaps if u do if it wont budge u may need 2 use ur HU removal tools 2 free it up a bit
