Hi guys, got a frustrating issue here concerning my sound system. First of all I'll state my specs (pretty budget system).
Panasonic CQ-C1301W Head unit
Pioneer 6x9's
Kenwood 4 channel amp (cant remember exact model)
Sony 1200w 12" sub in box
6x9's are connected to the amp and sub is bridged on 2 channels. The head unit only has front and rear out, no sub out. Rear out is being used to connect to the amp.
---
Here's the problem: I went on a trip with some friends just recently and had luggage in the boot, when i took it out the sub wasn't secured and the next trip resulted in the sub falling forward and breaking/ripping the RCA's from the plugs making them unusable. As soon as this happened I heard zapping/static noises and within 10 or so seconds switched my head unit off.
Before the trip home I tried a quick fix so that i could listen to some music on the way back and reattached the 6x9's to the standard connection directly from the head unit (ensuring the fuse etc.. were taken out beforehand) and found that the rear left speaker only emitted very weak sound whereas the right speaker emitted half decent sound (not sure if it was worse than normal quality but it did sound pretty shit when turned up).
I replaced the RCA's today in hopes that the rear left speaker issue was only something I had overlooked or a loose wire and hoped new RCA's would fix this issue and the amp would be able to provide both left and right rear speakers with sound. WRONG. I did a lot of testing switching wires around, making sure both speakers worked, switching neg with pos, different wiring arrangements etc.. making sure I followed every guideline in the manual for the amp and still found that the rear left channel is bung. Everything seems to be plugged in perfectly fine (i hope). I've pretty much narrowed it down to either the head unit now being faulty due to the possibility of the wires rubbing against each other, the gas tank or chassy causing some sort of current that messed with the internals of the head unit, OR, the devil has messed with my wiring to piss me off.
Has anyone ever had this problem? I've had the head unit since march 29th 2006 and am considering taking a trip down to JB to hopefully claim it on warranty (not sure if i got 12 month warranty by default when buying?). Is there a way to test the head unit thoroughly to narrow down the issue more and if it is broken somehow, is it fixable/worth fixing? Would JB even consider it?
Cheers all, hope this query was clear.
All signs point to the Devil.......
BTW: Since you've eliminated the actual speaker and amp being faulty, it probably is your HU. Someone like Stone or 12volt or my personal favourite guru Car Audio Factory outlet could probably pinpoint the problem, but i'll go with a short in the RCA's which has partially blown your HU earth track? You can try taking it back but i think that comes under faulty install and unless they installed i doubt they'll cover it. Cant hurt to try

As stated above i purely took a punt (RCA short = blown earth tracks). Id imagine the same advice applies re warranty repairs? or is it a different kettle of bacon altogether
I really doubt that Kenwood would repair this on warranty as they know someone wtuffed around with it.... well would not be telling them that.
I can tell you though if it was a Pioneer that Pioneer Aust just replace the whole unit for us.
and if it was an ALPINE -- Then dont worry about seeing it for 12 weeks and then them stating there "LIMITED WARRANTY" Clause at you.
It is a shitty job to repair... and about $40 just for the POWER IC as it the HU will have a pre-amped out... so if it is not covered by warranty it will be about $140.00 to repair.
So you he would be better off replacing it with something DECENT!
