    Default Cutting metal parcel shelf

Hey i have decided to put my speakers in the metal part of the parcel shelf because my speakers are not performing well in the wooden parcel self. I was wondering what is the best way to go about cutting a whole for 6x9s in the metal. I have tried jigsaw but its too tight to cut a circle.

And yes i know its illegal and stuff but it doesnt concern me. cheers

Wait... so they sound bad in the parcel shelf, so you wanna mount them on the metal? Bad idea - they'll sound worse doing this, but hey its your car and your dime.

Realy? Well my mate has cheaper speakers then me and has his in the metal parcel shelf and they sound heaps better then mine in the wood. so i thought that putting them in the metal would be the reason that his are so good. What you think?

When i said worse, i was being a leetle dramatic. The performance difference will depend on how the speakers are mounted currently and how you will be able to mount them in the metal. For there to be improvements, you will need to assess how well they are mounted now with what you can expect to achieve with the metal. Without nowing the ins and outs of you and your mates system, cannot determine why his sound better.

IMHO i think its preferable to try reinforcing the parcel shelf first (if its flimsy) before i go cutting up my car, but its up to you to make that call. Good luck mate.

isnt it illegal 2 go cuttin at tha parcel shelf anyway, bcause it is part of tha bodies intergraty, cuttin it up means its weaker, so its illegal
    (what ive heard anyway)

also ive heard that you have to be carefull of exhuast fumes comeing up into the boot and getting into the back of your car! i know its a little dramatic but just make sure you have a good boot seal! also ive done the same thing in my vl but instead of putting speakers in i bought 2 sub box ports and stuffed them in so i could port my sub box into the back parcel shelf! well hope this helps mate good luck!
p.s if your worried about structureall integrity of the vehicle then cut a sheet of mdf board to fit your back parcel shelf and screw it in from the other side(in the boot ) with roofing screws just be carefull to get the right size screws otherwise the will come through the face up side of your mdf!

Yeah, the parcel shelf is a structural part of the car, so it is unroadworthy if you cut the steel of the parcel shelf on any cars made after 1973 (i think that's the right year).

Get speakers that fit or make spacers. Mounting to metal sounds like crap anyway.

Well I have just mounted my speakers to the metal parcel shelf and it sounds heaps better. A lot better bass and doesnt distort at high volume. I ended up borrowing a hand held nibbler thing. Couldnt find anyone with an electric. Dam it was hard work but the end result was worth it. I dono why some of you say it sounds no good on the metal parcel shelf. It sounds awsome.

And as for the legal side of things....I have got a new parcel shelf, took the carpet off the shelf and cut 6x9 holes where my speaker are. then put the carpet back on so now it looks like i have no speakers at all. So if i ever have to take it through rego or something im pretty sure they wont get in the boot and see if there is any structural damage because from the outside it looks like i have no speakers there.

Hey im young. I dont think before i do. Well i did think about it but i come to the conclusion that there are a lot of other reason why my car wont get through. But i know a few people that have cut there parcel shelves without a problem. I think they would be more concern about how low my car is and how loud it is.

Im happy. I dono bout where all you people are from, but here i know about 3 people with cut parcel shelves. Only one of them has a VN and hasnt had to go through rego. But the other 2 are always being defected for something and they never look at parcel shelf. Well they havnt yet anyway. And you can see the speakers through the window. Mine looks like i have no speakers at all.

I hate all these stupid rules anyway. Hows little holes in parcel shelf going to do anything. I hate all these do gooders. My dad was saying he never had any of the problems, like im having, back when he was young. Its ridiculous some of the things you can get defected for
