You're really quite limited with a budget that small... but I'd probably be looking at Subs like Pioneer, Clarion, JBL etc. As for an amp, you won't be able to find anything with substantial power but just have a look at what the stores are offering. Try and buy sub and amp from the same store to get a better deal, maybe try to get a prefab sub box and wiring kit thrown in... unless you are allowing more in your budget for the install?
    Jaycar may be a good option for an amp too... I'm currently using an older model Jaycar amp, the Response 4x100 Wrms, to feed a 15" Kicker CompVR sub. There's better amps out there, but for the price I paid for it, it can't be beat. Anyway here's the two Jaycar amp's I'd recommend to you;

Precision Response Car Amp 2x150WRMS $249.95
This will bridge to a massive 500 Wrms, giving your sub huge power. Only problem is that your sub will be very loud and the rest of your system (I'm assuming stock speakers running off the head unit) won't be able to keep up.

    Response Car Amp 4x100WRMS $299.95
This thing actually puts out 4x130 Wrms, and a big 380 Wrms bridged! With this amp you can use the front two channels to power your front stage speakers (giving them 130 Wrms each, make sure they can handle that much power before you hook them up!), while bridging the rear two channels giving you 380 Wrms to power the sub. This gives you a good start to your system, enabling you to upgrade your front stage later down the track and already having the power there to feed them.

Also.. remember to stay away from brands like BOSS. If it looks too damn good for the price, it's most likely crap. Sony Xplod is usually not recommended as well... not that's it's complete crap, but it is usually way over priced.
Stores to shop at; JB-Hifi, Strathfield, Autobahn. You should be able to find something in your budget at one of these stores, they're usually more than happy to do a package deal when buying more than one item, and don't forget to haggle. If you can't find a good enough deal, consider those Jaycar amps, they are actually pretty good. And don't forget to listen to the items before you buy them if possible!

Thanks for that reply mate. I really appreciate the trouble you went to.

I was thinking the 2x150WRMS Jaycar amp as a possibility too. And i'll probly end up getting on of the pioneer subs in the prefab boxes that they are selling them in atm or something.

I havent got an amp on the fronts and backs, i was guna try with just tuning the bass half out of them and have the bass come mainly from the sub, thats why i wanted to power it pretty good-ly.

I might first off just get an amp kit, install it, and then put 1 of my bros amps in and one of his two subs and try it out, see how it sounds when the fronts and backs are tuned how i said above, then ill know if thats a good way to do it, or if the front splits and rear 6x9s will be too loud and NOISY and hurt ya ears and ****.

I know 6x9s arent suited for the rear with a sub but yeah, i aint got enough money atm to change them, maybe later down the track. Although i've known several people who have had subs with 6x9s in the rear and they all sounded fine.

    Cheers

Note that this amp is actually capable of 255 watts into 2 ohms and that is why when bridged it is capable of 500 into 4 ohms...

uhhhhh then turn the gain down?? you'll never listen to it that loud anyway

wellllll my mate ended up getting this sub for $280 on new years day in a box, its a 12" compVR, so if you really want to get bang for buck id recommend going on a big sale...

and he also got a response 4x100 (its really 4x130) for $240 and it sounds pretty nice because i think his sub is 400rms and the amp is pumping out 380wrms so it sounds nice, well i reckon it does
so for 520 he got a sub an amp that rattles his car like crazy, worth it

btw with jaycar if you decide to go get a response amp, tell them you have recommended people to buy there stuff and you have gave them alot of business and whats the lowest they can do, my mate ended up getting the price for 5+ of the item..... goodluck with it

Gains aren't used for volume control. All I was saying was that having the sub powered alone may not be great because it will overpower the other speakers. Not saying it wouldn't work, but it would definitely be better if he could also get the fronts amped as well.

My current set up only has the sub amped. It's just a very quick (and kinda dodgy I guess) install of my old amp and sub out of my VK from a couple years back. Thought the stock speakers in the VS needed some added bass so I added the amp and sub... and being a 4x100 WRMS amp I'm not gonna use it to power the front stockies, I think 100 WRMS will be too much for them. But the system still works and definitely sounds heaps better now with the added bass. Just don't have the time and money right now to complete the system with quality gear. Looking at getting some Boston splits for the front and maybe an Audison amp to power them, wont be happening till at least tax return time though, if at all.

gain control is used to match the level of the sub to the rest of the system... ask anyone with a bit of common sense.
