Default Head unit with USB input. Any feedback on them?

Looking at getting a new headunit that wil play mp3's and have a keen interest in some of the models that also have a usb slot in the front.
I know I can fit a heap of mp3's on a cd, but it would be handy to just shove a few new ones on an old usb stick and play it through that.
    But, how good are they?
Does the unit take ages to read what's on it?
    Are they slow and jumpy?
So if anyone's got one, please let me know any good or bad experiences with them.
    Thanks.

JVC have a front input model though dont trash about in the front as you can break them off in the head unit.

For my money the DEH-5950IB are get value at about $369.00 for JC members

yeah go for it! From what i have heard the USB inputs are great, as it allows you to have more music than normal, without having to carry more cd's. USB drives take up hardly any space, and ya dont have to worry about them getting scratched like cd's. Plus you can change the music on them whenever you want without having to burn a new cd each time.

Me any my mates were discussing this yesterday, if you wanted to, you could buy an external hard drive (but it may jump a bit though) and plug it in via the USB. As we all know, you can never have enough songs or hard drive space!

That's exactly why I've been mulling over the idea of getting one with the usb ports.

I reckon i can fit plenty on a 1 gig usb stick for my daily grind to work and back.
Might check out jb hi-fi and see what they have. I get the strathfield junk mail, but the closest shop near me is a bugger to park at.

Just so you know guys the units that I tested with my usb hdd did not work and I tried three of them. If you want to use a hdd on a usb port make sure you testit before you buy as I don't think you will have much luck

I know the JVC head units with USB ports will read USB flash drives, USB hard drives (the small ones with no power supply anyway) and also USB memory card adaptors.

Personally I find the biggest drama with mp3 files on large storage devices is finding the song you're looking for...LCD screens are the only really good solution.

Yeah, I was wondering about that. If you use the usb slot, when you put your mp3's on the flash drive, must they all be in one spot, or can you put the files into folders.
    Say like:
    heavy
    doof doof
    rock
    new

And so forth. And then can you tell the head unit to select a certain folder?
Or is it nothing like that?

You can put your music into folders and sub-folders, or leave them in the root directory, or both. I think the limit on the JVC units is 3 or 4 levels. You can scroll through folders, and then the files in each folder.

For instance, I have 3 albums by the same artist - each album has a sub-directory in the main directory for that artist...but I also have a couple songs just in the main folder too. The head unit plays the single songs first (in alpha order) then the first album (in alpha order) and so on.

That model has "giga panel" which means the front face has 1gb built in flash memory. You can remove the face and plug it into your computer to change the contents of the memory via a USB cord.

    I like that idea. Brilliant.
edit - but it seems the cheapest I can find that model for is around $450 on ebay. Too much for me.
