Hi there, i have made 2 6x9 boxes to fit into the back of my vn, i cut holes in the parcel shelf and the boxes are bolted on to the metal underneath the parcel shelf. the speakers just aren't putting out the bass that they were in the store. should i port the boxes at all? how can i produce more bass?
Are you running them off an amp? You cant just port any speaker enclosure. How big is the box? have you tried running them infinite baffle/free air?
The enclosure required by any speaker (ie wether it needs a sealed box, ported box, or infinite baffle) will depend on the drivers TS specs.
u dont need a box if you have the 6x9's screwed into the parcel shelf, you dont even need an amp, just a pair of good 6x9s and a good head unit and your entire boot will provide the box for 6x9 to give it bass.
He is asking why the speakers dont provide the same amount of bass that they did instore - an obvious reason for this could well be they were amped in store. You may not need an amp, but it'll make a massive difference to any bass output.
Box wise, some 6x9's will perform better in a small sealed enclosure as opposed to using the boot space - but as above this depends on the driver in question.
maybe theres a gap between his speakers and boxes?
The speaker boxes are bolted on to the metal, below the parcel shelf. in reply to joe peeps i think i will just amp it because i do remember them being amped in the store. i didnt realise that an amp would boost the bass i thought it only increased the volume which isn't an issue in my case. (i'm a newbie to all things car audio lol) thanks for your help.
you prolly have them out of faze
everyone does it bitches and moans about not as bassy in shops but its because you dont know how to wire them up correctly
maie sure spkrs are bolted in coorrectly and wired correclty and it will make bass doesnt matter what brand
out of faze means you have 1 spkr +_ and the other one _+ swap one spkr only
i was going to say dont go rushing out to buy an amp just yetFirst, i was going to suggest removing the boxes if its an option, and seeing if theres any improvement as they may be too small.
I hadnt considered phase as an issue because i gathered he was still getting some bass, just not what he expected.... Easy way to test without having to get at the wiring is to switch your balance to one side. If your speakers are out of phase you will notice an improvement in bass when only one side is working. if this is the case follow Darons advice. if neither improves the situation to a point your happy with, then get yourself an amp. good luck
yeah I made sure they werent out of phase because i no that sounds crap when they are lol. i will remove the boxes and trail some different options and see what works best. cheers for all your help.
I just put mine in moulded speaker pods that I bought from JB Hi-Fi on the parcel shelf. They put out plenty of bass for a set of 6x9. And they look nice and tidy too.
